Four men were burned to
death Sunday when their light
plane crashed after attempting
to take off from a field on the
farm of Keith Tyndall, RR 4,
Clinton, about a mile north of
Clinton.
They were headed for Grand
Bend.
The dead men were Ray J.
Sparks, 38, a Chatham contrac-
tor and pilot of the plane, and
three brothers, nephews of the
pilot, 24-year-old Gerry, 21-
year-old Dennis, and 19-year-old
Robert Sparks, all of Chatham,
The -pilot of the plane set the
craft down on the field and
asked 18-year-old Roy Crich,
who lives across the road from
the Tyndall farm, where they
were and explained they were
heading for Grand. Bend. The
pilot added that the compass
was a bit out and is reported
to have said the engine was
heating up badly.
One of the men said they
would need about 250 yards to
take off, according to the youth,
and another thanked him and
said, "You can watch our take-
off."
Crich said the plane took off
to the east, banked to the west,
and then appeared not to gain
altitude. It hit a hydro pole
and fell to the ground in a ball
of flame. The plane crashed
near the edge of the Base Line
Road, between Clinton and
Auburn.
The youth's mother, Mrs. Wil-
bert Crich, called the Clinton
fire department and the On-
tario Provincial P olice in
Wingham. Rural hydro crews
had to cut the live wires from
two poles — the one clipped off
by the plane and another which
was burned. The ground he
green the broken pole and the
plane was baked by the heat,
witnesses said.
The pilot rented the plane, a
Piper Tri-Pacer, Sunday morn-
ing from Seneca Air Service,
Wallaceburg, and had planned
to fly to Sarnia.
According to Sgt. H. Barker,
Goderich. OPP, an acetylene
torch was required to free the
bodies from the wreckage. all
of which Nere badly burned.
The torch was obtained from a
Gar Myers, sup't of the Fin-
ery park, announced this week
that one of his "biggest head-
aches" would be banished for
next year with the calling of
tenders for the paving of sev-
eral main roads in the camp-
ing spot.
He reported that tender s
placed in several leading con-
struction magazines called for
the paving of close to six miles
of road in the park.
The work ..to be done will in-
elude front the main gate right
through to the camp's edmints-
tration office, a distance of
over two and a half miles,
Paving will also carry on from
there to the main camp office
at the Dunes, a distance of an-
other half a mile. The final
section to be paved would be a
stretch of over two miles from
the administration office to pic-
nic area number nine.
The park sup't stated he did
not know exact13 when tenders
would close, but it is expected
to be very shortly as the work.
is to lie started early in Sep-
tember and a completion dead-
line has been set for the end
of that month,
Myers reported that the roads
would be paved in a new meth-
od known a s soil cement,
He explained that large ma•
chines resembling rota-tillers
would chop up the existing san-
dy roads to a depth of close to
nine inches and then dry ce-
ment would be worked in with
the loose soil
Water would then be added
and after another working over,
the roads would be roiled. After
they had dried ton neat' solid.
condition a permanent coating
of tar would be put on.
"This.s will he a great boon to
us," Myers stated, reporting
that the roads were a content
headache to tile park staff.
