The landscaping, behind Don
Banting's insurance office, the
Masonic Hall and Howard
Black's shop is completed and
already the grass is up. The
large driveway back of the
landscaping is still not paved.
Residents from the south end
are soon going to have a longer
walk for their mad, As for
north end residents it is not
going to make so much differ-
ence, as most of them will still
he coming up to the old loca-
tion to go to the bank, drug
Fire bug
hits again
An attempt was made Friday
night to burn down the Scott
Elevator. When workmen went
to open up Saturday morning
they found the doorway charred,
Fortunately the fire had burn-
ed itself out and did little dam-
age. With the CNR station, the
lumber yard and other build-
ings so close, Lucanites shud-
der to think what might have
happened,

Son of the late 11.17„ and Mrs,
Sam Haskett, Mr, Haskett was
born .en Concession 4 Biddulph,
about two miles north of Lucan,
In 1907 he married ,Jennie
Henry (mother of Colvin and
Velma) and farmed in London
Townahip, concession 16 for five
years, then returned to conces-
sion 4 Biddulph, where he
bought the farm of the late Mr.
John Abbott,
In 1918 Mrs. ltaskett died and
some time later he married
Jennie Foreman . (mother of
Audrey). While on the farm he
and his brother ran a grocery
store purchased from the late
Mr. J. j, Hodgins. This store
was burned down and rebuilt
and is now occupied by the
Nu-way Motors,
In 1948 Mc, and Mrs. Haskett
moved to Alice St., Lucan, but
Mr. Haskett continued to work
on the farm. In. May 1961. Mrs.
Haskett died and Mx:. Basked
lived. alone. About five weeks
ago he took a heart attack and
was taken to St. Joseph's Hos-
pital but never regained his
speech, Mr, Haskett's death
makes the eighth death on Alice
St, in less than 14 months.

Pigeon race
Lucan fanciers were again
among the winners in Satur-
day's 400-mile pigeon race from
St. Jerome, Quebec, Mr. Albert
McGregor of London was first
but 'Mr. Clarence Hardy was
just two minutes behind. He also
came fourth and fifth and his
father Mr. Frank Hardy's bird
came sixth,

The Lucan Arena Board is
again sponsoring a summer'
school. with two local girls, Ca,
role Davis and Mary Mothers,
in charge. Twenty,four children
turned up for registration on
Monday and since then more
have enrolled. The morning
session is from 10 to 12 noon
and afternoon, 2 to 4 p.m, Ca-
role has charge of children up
to 10 years and Mary for those
over 10. The morning is given
Over to playground activities,
swings, teeters, games etc. and
the afternoon to craft, painting
paper cutting,, soap carving,
painting of electric -bulbs, etc,
The duration of the school
will depend on the attendance
and interest shown,
A fee of 50c a week is
charged each child to help de-
fray expenses,

The Zurich Hardware and
Builders Supply Ltd., who had
the contract of erecting Lucan's
new ,$21,500 post office expects
to complete the job in another
two weeks,
The one-story 38'x37' building
faces Main St. with entrance
from Frank St. for mail. The
exterior is finished in plywood
panels and red brick veneer. A
wooden canopy covers the front
entrance and mail chute, and
the loading dock at the rear.
Mail boxes are being in-
stalled this week on the west
Mrs. J. Fleming
former resident
Airs. James Alexander Flem-
ing. the former Myna McRae,
7 died at the K-\V Hospital, Kit-
chener, on Saturday, July 4.
Funeral service was held at
Schrieter Sandrock Funeral.

July 10, then to Knox Presbyte-
rian Church, Jarvis, at 3:30
p,m, with interment in Jarvis
cemetery.
Mrs, Fleming is survived by
one sister, Mrs. Harry M.
Lackner of Kitchener. Mr,
Fleming predeceased her.
Mr. and Mrs. Fleming lived
in Lucan during the years, Mr.
Fleming vas manager of the
Bank of Commerce here, in the
building now occupied by the
Ontario Hydro. and lived in the
living quarters behind and above
the bank.

the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas
Batting of Ailsa Craig met for
a reunion, Guests were present

lia and Lucan. Mr. Gordon
Ranting of Lucan was honorary
president, his son, Carl Battl-
ing of Kapuskasing, was presi-
dent and Mr. William Allison of

At the second reunion held
July 8, 55 members of the Cob-
leigh side of the house met.

can. Mrs. Jack Ryan was pres-

secretary of this reunion.
Bicycle accident
Fred Smith, eight-year-old son
of Mr. and. Mrs, Ralph Smith,
got off on a bad start for his
summer vacation. While visit-
ing his uncle, Mr. Andy Thomp-
son of Clandeboye, he was rid-
ing down a hill on his bicycle
when he fell.
Dr. W. Butler of Ailsa Craig
sent him to St. Joseph's Hospi-
tal, where it was found he had
a chipped knee besides cuts and
bruises on both arms.

CGIT learns
RC symbols
Nine of Lucan.'s ten CGIT
members, and their leader Mrs,
Murray Hodgins, had an inter,
eating day last Tuesday, Meet-

they went first to St. Patrick's
Church, Biddulph, where Father
Bricklin gave them a warm
welcome and an hour and a
half of his time, explaining the
lay-out of a Catholic church
and the meaning of the various
symbols. He also answered all
questions as to the difference
in methods if conducting Cath-
Olio sacraments to that of the
Protestant churches,
The group went on to Fan-
shawe for a box lunch and a
tour of. Pioneer Village. By this
time all were ready for a re-
freshing swim, before tearing
the nature trail through the
woods as a finale for a happy
day.
