The popular softball pitcher suffered a hemorrhage in a blood vessel in his head. He was able to get his truck to the side of the road where he was found three or four hours later by Reg Stagg of Exeter, who had been notified by relatives in the area who had been trying to get in touch with Gifford's wife His wife, Barb, reports he was described as "rigid" when taken to the recovery room at the hospital but he has overcome this condition and is not paralyzed a s it was first feared.
