"an awful blower," but poetised common

the ancient falsifiers.
The Honorable Mr. Buck's manner of
living not being "seconded" by a corres-
ponding manner or means, be very frequent-
ly ran things to the ground -got is debt,
bead and heels. The Honorable Mr. B.
bad patrouised a dealer in Spaoisk mantles,
corduroys and opera vests, to the amount
of some two hundred dollar*, and, very
naturally, the fabricator of said cloth appur-
tenances to the body, got mad towards the
last, and threatened "the weste•n member"
with a course of legal sprouts, unless he
"sbowed cause," or came up and squared
the yards. As Honorable John Buck bad
frequent invitations to pursue such courses,
and not being apiritalty.or • personally in-
clined that way, be let the notice slide.
Shears, the tailor, delertninetl to put
the Hon. John through, so he got out a
writ of the aragest kind -arson, burglary,
and false pretence --and a deputy sheriff
was soon on the taps to smoke the western
member out of hit boots. Upon euquiriog
at the United States Noted, where the
honorable gentleman bad been wont to put
up, they found he had vacated weeks be-
fore, and gone to l'obe's Hotel. Thither,
next day, the deputy repaired, but old
Mother Yoke,(rest her soul !) informed
the officer that the honorable geuticmen had
stepped out in the morning in a hurryr like,
and forgot to pay a small bill.
John was next traced to the Marshal
llou,e, where be had left his mark and
cleared for Sanderson's where the indefa-
tigable tailor and his terrier of the law pur.
toed the member, and (earned that tie had
gone to Washington !
"Done, by Jeems!" cried Shears.
"Hold o0," says the deputy, "told on,
he's not off; merely a dodge to get away
from this hoax; we'll find him,
Fait "
Shears did wait, so dad the deputy sheriff,
until other bills, amounting to a good round
sum, were lodged at the sheriff's office, and
the very sheriff himself took it in hand to
nab the cidevaat 51. Cr and cause him to
suffer a little for his country and his
friends !
Now, at w chanced that.Sheriff F., who
was a politician of popular renown, a good
jolly fellow, knew the Hon. Mr. Muck
haring had "the pleasure of his aequain
tance" some mooths previous, and Karin
been floored in a political argument by th
western member, was inclined to be dow
or hits.
"I'll slake bim, I'II engage !" says the
sheriff, as be thrusts the documents into bit
pocket and proceeded to hunt up the trans-
grestor. Accidently as it were, who
should the sheriff meet, turning a corner
into Chestnut street, but our gallant hero
of the ballot box m the rural districts, once
upon a time.
"Ah, ha -a -a! How are you, sheriff?"
l"
boisterously exclaims the ex -M. C., as fa-
miliarly as you please.
"Ah, Mr. Buck ! glad to see roil."
"Fine day, sheriff."
"Elegant, sir, prime," aid the sheriff.
"What do you think of Mr. Jigger's
speech on the clam trade 1 Did you read
Mr. Porkapog's speech oe the widening
of Jerkin's ditch!"
For which general remarks on the affairs
of the nation, the sheriff put some corres-
ponding replies, and so they proceeded
along until they approached a well known
dining saloon, then under the supervision of
a burly cnglishmen, whose dinners were
far more satisfactory thau his manners;
aad as it was about the time people dined,
and tbe sheriff being a man who liked a
fat dingier and a fine bottle about as well
as anybody, when the Homorabte Mr. Buck
proposed -
r' What say yea, sheriff, to a diener and
• bottle of old Sherry at---! W. don't
often meet (1), so let's sit down and have
a quiet talk over things."
"Well, Mr. Buck," said the sheriff, 111
would like to jest es well es not, bet rN
got a disagreeable bit of holiness to N
with you, and it would be hardly friendly to
eat your dinner without apprising you ei-
ther

"Ah, sheriff, what nit, prey 1" rays the
rather alarmed Diddler, "eotbies senqus•

"Ob, so, not serious, partir-.larly, only a
writ, Mr. Berk; a writ, that's ail."

"For your arrest, sir, oe sight." mys 'b.
"Now, Mr. F.," says the adroit ea -5I
C., "call for jest what you like ; I leave i
to you, sir."
"Roast ducks, --what do yon ay, Beek!'
"Good,"
"Oyster sauce and lobster salad 1,'
•
"Good," 'pia echoes the western mem-
ber.
"And a----; well, waiter, you bring mime
of tbe beat Ude dtsbes you have," says tbe
sheff.
••etYea, sir," says the waiter, disappearing
to fill the order.
•' What are yoa going to drink, sheriff 1"
make the t000rabk gent.
"Oh, alt, yes. Waiter, bring us a bot-
tle of Sherry ; you take Sherry, Bock 1"
"Yee, I'll go Sherry."
The Sherry was breugbt and partly dis-
cussed
iecussed by the time the dinner was spread.
"They keep the finest port here you ever
tasted," says the Diddler.
"Do they 1" be responds, "well, suppose
we try it eh 1"
So the old port was brought and the two
worthies laid back and really enjoyed them-
selves in the luxuries of the sumptuously
kept restaurant; they eat, drauk, and smoked
until sated nature cried enough, and the
sheriff began to think of hesitates.
"Suppose we top off with a tine hottle of
liogluh ale, sheriff 1" .
"Well be it so ; and then, Beck, we'll
hare to proceed to the office."
"Waiter, bring me a couple of bottles
ofyour English ale," says the llou. t.lr.
Buck.
"Yes, sir "
"Aad 1'11 see to the bill, sheriff, while.
the waiter brings the ale," said the ex -M.
C., leaving the room "for a momrot" to
speak to the landlord.
"Landlord," ay+ the Diddler, "do An
know (bat gentleman with whom I've dioed
is 6fteeii 1'
"No, I don't," says the landlord.
"Well," says Diddler,"I've no particu-
lar acquaintance with ham ; he invited me
to dine; 1 suppose he intends to pay fir
what be ordered ; but (whispering) you had
better get your mooey before he gets out
of that room."
"Oh, ho, coming that ere dodge, eh!
I'll show bim," sato the burly landlord,
makin tracks for the room, from which
the sheriff was now emerging to look after
his prisoner.
" rhere'efor the ale," says the Diddler,
placing half* dollar in tbe waiters hand,
"1 ordered that, and there's pay for it," -
So saying he ramoused.
"Say, but look Isere, Buck, I say, hold
on, I've got a writ, and -
"Hang toe writ, pay your bili like a
gentleman, and come along!" exclaimed
the ex -1l. C., making himself scarce.
It was in ram that the sheriff stated his
authority, and innocence in the pecuniary
affairs ot the dinner, for the waiter swore
roundly that the other gentleman had paid
for all he ordered and the landlord, who
- could not be convinced to the contrary,
swore that the idea was to gouge bim,
e which rould'ot be done, and before the
n sheriffgot off, he had his wallet depleted
