BIRTH OF A PRINCE.
The birth of a young Prince this week
has evoked a bunt of loyalty in the news-
papers, in the Court Circular, and within
the walls of Parliament. Some of the
"best possible public instructora" seize the
occasion to read long homilies to ltoyalty
on th*roper education of children, and
lbw unfrortenate career and habits of some
of the suns of George the 7 bird are iatro-
deced by way of pointing the moral.—
Certainly 'mother monarch or two like
George the fourth would go far to shake
the moaarchial iestitstioos of this country,
deep as lh. love of them may be in the oa-
tioaal mind. Probably, the eooduct of
some of the Royal Princes of the I&.tige0e-
rat a may be traced to the extremely
feeble character oftheir father. The ince-
tal powers of George the Third might
hare rendered him a respectable country
paleness or farmer; but they were sadly
too weak for a throe*. This defect may
Ise atoned for where a feeble monarch has
the tousle' of wise advisers, but it is fatal
to t1• due •earcise of par•etal astbority.
Itis fortunate for -the coiatry at the pre-
test time, that the Royal Cason is a man
ol Talent and eaergy,--one who will cont -
r and the respect as well as the affection of
his children, while tie Sovereign is really a
pattern of domestic virtues. These "are

RETRENCHMENT AND REFORM.—"J
hare just seen a statement prepared, in
answer to an Address, of the results of lion.
Dr. Rolph's improvements in, and success-
ful administration of the Crown Lands De-
partment. It appears that the average pro-
duce of the Timber dutiel for the last three
years 3:d not exceed £25000. Last year,
after allowing for all deductions, including
the amount thrown off on acfount of reduc-
ed duties, about which Houlton made so much
noise, the reveiue will amount to upwards
of £E50,000. Tliia increase is chiefly
owing to the vigorou and successful efforts
of the Commissioner in preventing frauds
and evasions of the low. So much fou
hoeing an able, honest man at the head of
an imfortaut Department. Let the tortes
rave, while the people thrive. I)r. Rolpb
has saved in his Department alone, enough
to pay the salaries and expenses of the en-
tire Ministry. --North American.
