It was a real heart-breaker for the local kids who went into the game. as derided underdogs to the much bigger northern .squad, but who went and outplayed their foes but couldn't put the puck in the net. The, Coppereliff kids opened the scoring at the 1:30 mark of the first period with rangy John. Butler, doing the honors on a play with Dennis Wing and Tom Deacon. OHA title — Continued from page 6 coach Bi11 McCrae said as he walked around shaking the hand of each of the Combines after the game, "You never gave up". . Unfortunately the series ended on a bit of a poor note between the two clubs as the Hensall-Zurich. Management felt the Chicks had given them a had deal by Playing the game. on Tuesday. It had originally been planned for Saturday, but the Chicks changed their mind and re- ceived an okay from the 011A when they pointed out they were taking their ice out. How- ever, the ice will be. in until at least Thursday as the inter- mediates tackle Pert. Dover that night The big dif- ference in dates was that. Fe- riae would have been able to play nn Saturday , , , The Combines out-shot the Chicks 41 to 26 in the game, but this didn't exactly indicate the play as the Hensall-Zurich crew only out-shot them.. 11-9 in the sec- ond period, . but had a much Wirier margin of the play as they had shots blocked by de- fensernen at the last minute, or drilled pucks wide of the net . Clo s e to too fans made. the trip from the area and several got together at the end of the .seeend period and put up. $50.00. for the player who scored the last goal in an effort to spark their left .- The refereeing left plenty to be desired as they missed several. off-sides and most of the Pee- eall-Zurich -crowd figured the first goal came on a play. :that was at least three feet. offside, ye The trio worked the puck into the Exeter end and Butler took a poke at the disc and it hit the corner of Callum Mc- Phee's pad and trickled down into the net, just inches over the red line. The Exeter six fought hack valiantly to get the equalizer hut they couldn't heat' Pat Grace in the Coppereliff nets, who posted his fourth shut-out in the week-long tournament. Team captain Bob Burns who lead the finals with a total of 32 scoring points in their first six games, came close on two occasions when he powered his way through the defense, but he lost the puck each time on the soft, sticky lee to have his attempts thwarted, Brian Baynham also came close in the dying minutes when he picked up a loose puck just over centre to race in un- molested, hut his blazing drive was deflected into the corner of the arena as Grace managed to get a piece of his stick on the puck as it headed for an open corner. GAME COMMENTS — The game was originally schedul- ed for 5:00 pen., but was mov- ed ahead to 9:15 a.m. as the afternoon games were cancell- ed due to the fact the warm weather played havoc with the ice, The ice was still very :poor in the morning and this appear- ed to hamper the small Exeter squad as they had difficulty getting any dangerous shots away while in the Coppereliff zone „ • The win was a big one for John Butler. who scored the winning goal on his 14th birthday and as team captain, received the "D" championship trophy . „ The locals won five of their seven games as they battled their way to the final and in most of the games appeared to have the knack to make their opposition play their type of game. Daughter: New; I've got to go back tetnetrowl Northern entry win at Goderich The old jinx that has plagued Exeter pee wee squads in the past raised its head in Gode- rich Saturday as the locals bowed out in the semi-finals of the "C" series to the eventual winners from Gerson. It was the fourth time in 11. years that an Exeter entry has made it to the semi-final round and it was the fourth time they have failed to go any further. The big, speedy squad from the Sudbury suburb had little difficulty in ousting the locals as they posted. a convincing 7- 2 win as the locals didn't look nearly as impressive as they had in their first, three wins in the popular week-long tourney. Flashy Frank Hamill and Jeff Della Vedova paced the attack with a pair of tallies each, while Ricky Pasanen, DuaneDragger and Bruce Dub. blestine notched a single each. Big Peter Lawson and Bill Fairbairn each accounted for the two Exeter markers. The Gerson six moved into a 1-0 lead at the 8:04 mark of the first period and upped their margin to two goals two minutes later as they outshot Exeter 7.3 in the initial stanza. They continued to dominate play in the second as they didn't allow the locals a single shot on Maurice Renaud in the nets and moved ahead by a 3.0 count with a tally in the last minute of the period. The winners upped their lead to 4.0 at the 2:27 mark. of the final period, but Peter Lawson pulled the local kids back in the contest, 20 seconds later when be tipped in a shot from the point by Allan Diller, who had been fed a pass by John Loader, However, Gerson mov e d ahead by a 64 count before Bill Fairbairn raced in all alone to blink the light at the 13:32 mark. The winners still didn't quit, and they capped their scoring at the 14:08 mark on an un- assisted marker by Hamill. GAME COMMENTS -w. The northern crew used their size to advantage as they humped the smaller Exeter kids around and appeared to get. away with several infractions as they body-checked outside their own zone .
