time to start
those begonias
Have you started your tuber-
ous begonias yet? if not, horti-
culturists with the Ontario De-
partment of Agriculture sug-
gest it would be wise to do so
right away.
Begonias do not like cold,
damp soil, so it's best not to
set them out in the garden
until the soil has begun to
warm up, and all the danger
,of frost is past. Starting your
Plants now, will mean that
they are all set to flower by
the time the garden is ready
and the weather mild enough
for them.
Start the 'tubers into growth
in flats or half leafmould or
peat and half sand, with the
crowns exposed, and water
sparingly till growth starts.
When the tubers are well
rooted, pot them in four to
five inch pots, using one part
soil, one part leafmould or
peat,,and half part sand. Plant
at the same depth as in the
flats.
Water the pots regularly
when the soil looks dry, and
apply a complete soluble fer-
tilizer once a week.
When planting out, remem-
ber to plant them when there
is high shade or protection from
the afternoon sun.
