HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1962-04-26, Page 8A GOOD EFFORT The Lucan-Ilderlon Combines ‘vere the last area intermediate hockey team to hang up their gear for the season when they were uueted in the OHA semi-finals by the strung Port Dover Sailors. It marked ohe of the most sueceesful sea- sons the Combines have ever enjoyed, and any area team has had as far as that goes. as they posted 30 Wills in 34 games played. Their lone season loss was to Centralia after 23 straight wins and they won seven more in a row before losing three straight to the Lake Erie squad. Unfortunately., most area fans hay e not given the Combines their just dues as a top hockey squad because they feel they have been playing against second rate clubs all season. This may be true in some instances, but it was more the fact the Combines were so good that it made these other teams look second rate. Using players who have played in the southern com- munities for several years, the Combines were loaded with talent. They showed well against Port Dover and were not as badly outclassed as the final 11-3 score would indicate. The L-.1 crew won the first game right in Port Dover and lost the second game in the last four minutes on two costly mistakes. They were beaten 7.4 in the third game in Port Dover, but again they held their own better than the score would indicate and only the stellar net play of Dennis Leeson in the Port Dover nets kept his squad in the game as the Combines did everything with the puck but put it in the net. The absence of Dusty Adis for the last two games hurt them considerably as coach Max O'Neil had to break up two of his lines and at this stage in the season that is a difficult thing to do and keep their winning combination, The Sailors were also a power-packed out- fit but they continually played for the breaks. They appeared to be content to let Leeson play his heart out and wait for the breaks. which they capitalized on to perfection. This can certainly be proven by the fact that big Doug Loveday was the team's leading scorer for the past two seasons. The lanky 210 pound forward never gets back inside his own blueline and roves around centre waiting for a long pass to send him in alone on the opposition goalie. Naturally, if the Sailors get a lead in the game they can work this to perfection as the other team has to draw their defense up in an effort to cut down the margin and they have to take chances. This is primarily what happened in the final two games of the series, as the Combines actually outplayed the Sailors but couldn't put the puck in the net and were victims of this fast break from centre. We think all the players down Lucan- Merton way deserve much credit for their perform- ance and especially coach Max O'Neil. This was the young winger's first attempt at this position and he handled his players well, and still finished tied with teammate Steve Storey for the scoring honors. Many people might think it would be dif- ficult to handle this crew as they have no less than three former playing coaches on the loster, but they worked well together and played the game only for the sport and exercise. However, the man who needs special com- mendation is Harvey Langford, who once again acted as president of the club. Harvey drove to all their away games, took tickets at their home en- counters and many other things that once again prove that he is without equal in area hockey circles as far as work and inspiration is concerned. We have always received full co-operation from this club and should give a special "thank you" to Bob Murray who so faithfully keeps score at their home games and makes sure we get re- ports. His reports are always very neat and reach us as soon after the game as possible. So, we. send along our thanks to the club and congratulations for their superb efforts dur- ing the past season. The only thing missing from th;ir success was the fans' support, LET'S DO IT RIGHT As we mentioned last week, Derry Boyle is °nee again thinking about baseball and if Exeter is going to have teams again this year, other fel- lows should take his example and start consider- ing it too. We understand Aub Farquhar .is entering a softball team again and so local players should have plenty of activity if they want it. However, it poses a bit of a problem as both teams appear to rely on players who play at both and also rely on players who they think will play, This has always been a bit of a sore point °Cvith us, because we think people who try out with teams should state their intentions long before the' Management makes their decision. We suggest that a meeting be held and a canvass taken of all those interested and . make sure they are willing to perform at ALL the games SO the lecal clubs won't have to throw in the towel after half the season when some players become . disinterested. So, if you'e interested at all, we. suggest you get in touch with either Derry or Aub and let them know, so they will have a sound basis to go OD When they enter teams. For those who just intend to .. work out for A few nights to- get in shape for golf or something els:, we seriously suggest you let the men know before they .start counting on you. This has always been a bit of a problem with local teams and we_ trust it will he tackled. Seriously this year so the managers will know exactly who they can count on to perform with them, After all, it's the least that can be expected of those who are Interested. They downed Chesley 3.2 to The Exeter pee tees battled their way into the semi-finals in Goderich when they scored a thrilling 5-4 win over Lam- beth in their third outing in one of the most exciting gables of the tournament. The locals scored three goals in the last tour minutes and Lambeth picked up one and it wasn't until. Bill Fairbairn broke away at centre to score at the 14:32 mark that the Red Loader squad clinched the tilt. The lead changed hands five times in the game and gave the spectators plenty of anxi- ous moments as first one team and then the other, appeared to have the game won. Lambeth jumped into an early 1-0 lead at the 1:35 mark when Reg Thomas came flying in to bang in a rebound alter Glen Stires had stopped a breakaway by Bruce Mitchell. Big Peter Lawson evened the count at the 5:30 mark an a power play when Barry Bayn- ham dug the puck out of the corner to pass it in front and Lawson made no mistakes with his hard drive past Barry Ful- ler, The two came hack at the 9:55 mark to give Exeter a 2-1 margin when Baynham took a pass at centre and passed to Lawson as they came in on a lone defender. The shifty cen- tre whipped around the de- fenseman and his 20-footer caught the corner before the goalie could move to block Lambeth knotted the count once again at the 4:50 mark of the second on the only goal of the period when they again worked their fast break to send Reg Thomas speeding in all alone on Stires. Once again, the Exeter goalie stopped the first attempt but Al Spicer came in to bang in the re- bound before Stires' mates could get back to help him out, The London entry took their second lead in the game at the 2:50 mark of the final period when flashy Paul Thomas came wheeling in from his point position to drill a hard shot into the mesh, The goal appeared as if it would stand up, but Barry Baynham evened the count at the 11:14 mark when Bill Fair- bairn blocked a clearing shot to send his life winger in all alone on Fuller. A minute later, Fairbairn again did a stellar job of block- The Exeter squirts failed in their bid. to regain their "D" championship in the Brampton Novice tournament when they were ousted by Winona by an 8.3 count in their two-game series, Monday. Lorne Haugh had ony four members back from last year's championship team and after ousting Elora on Saturday, they couldn't match strides with the bigger, faster Winona squad, However, the local young- sters, ranging in age ''rom eight to ten, gave it everything they had and it wasn't until the' last period of the second game that the winners had things their own way, They potted four goals in the last 12 minutes to post a 6.2 win in the game, after eking oat a thrilling 2.1 margin in the opener. However, they will have to be good if they expect to stop the locals, because Loader has one of the best teams ever to represent Exeter, despite the fact that only four are grad- uating this year. ing a Lambeth pass and he fed Peter Lawson who drilled his third puck into the net to give Exeter a 4.3 lead with only two minutes and 40 sec- onds remaining. However, Paul Thomas wound up at his own blueline at the 13:29 mark and worked his way past most of the Exe- ter team and after Stires blocked his shot from the cor- ner, Spicer came in to bang in the rebound to put the teams back on even grounds, Only five shots up The referees notified both clubs that Exeter were leading by a slim margin of five shots on the net and Lambeth picked up two quick ones as they hem- med the locals in their own end. However, David Burke flip- ped the puck out. of his own end and as they brought it back up, Fairbairn stepped be- tween two Lambeth players to grab the puck and pulled away from them both to go in alone on Fuller and he played it like a pro all the way as he dril- led his shot into the big cor- ner to give his team their one- goal margin. Bedlam broke loose as • the final buzzer rang when all the Exeter players raced to mob Stires and Fairbairn who along with Lawson were the big cogs in the win. The locals continued to ap- ply the pressure throughout the period but couldn't get the disc into the net until the early min- utes of the middle frame when several good saves and it wasn't until the 11:15 mark of the middle period that Winona were able to beat Shane when Donovan blinked the light on a play with Prentice, As it turned ,out, that was the winning marker as neither leant could get the puck past the agile netminders in the last period of play, although both teams came close on sev- eral occasions. I- Hero upped the count. to 3.0 on a play with John Loader. Watford got hack in the game in the third period, when Randy' Brown spoiled Glen Stires' shut-out bid on a neat thre.e.wav passing play at the 3:11 mark, However, Lawson came right back in a little over a minute on a etas with Rill Fairbairn to :increase the lead to 3.1 and he pulled the game out o.( reach of the scrappy opposition on a play with Barry Baynham at the 13:42 mark of the final stanza. Nip Chesley six in opening game The Exeter pee \ e made a successful debut in the .Go- derich tournament, Saturday, when. they edged Chesley 3.2 in an exciting game that wound up with two goals being scored in the last 20 seconds, 'Red and Maxine Loader's crew opened the scoring in the first period when their son, John, blinked the light at the 8:15 mark on a neat three-way passing play with Don Camp- bell and Ricky Weber, The locals upped their mar- gin to two goals late in the second stanza when big Peter Lawson worked his way through several Chester de- fenders to get a clear shot at Larry Krentzkamp and the speedy centre made no mis- takes with his low shot into an open corner. Chesley finally got hack in the game after only nine sec- onds of play in the final pe- riod when flashy Bob Hamil- ton took a oass front Bob Pratt to beat Exeter's Glen Stires and cut the margin to 2-1. It appeared that would be the final count in the game, but john Loader pulled the game out of reach of the north- ern crew when he tallied his second goal in the morning fixture with only 20 seconds left to play in the fast con- test. As it: turned out, this proved to be the winner, as the locals relaxed after that one and Chesley came back with three seconds showing on, the clock to whittle the lead to 3-2 with Hamilton again being the marksman, The contest was a thriller all the way between the two evenly matched clubs and both goalies came up with good games as Stires had to turn aside 17 shots, while the Ches- ley netminder blocked 22 of the 25 sent his way. Lawson hot Captain Peter Lawson has been the spark plug so far for the Exeter entry, potting seven goals in their three games. He started out with only one against Chesley but came back to net three each against Wat- ford and Lambeth. The lanky, free-wheeling cen- tre has drawn the raves of many of the pro scouts attend- ing the week-long affair. Backed up by a solid defense, Glen Stires is playing his usual stellar game in the nets and both forward lines have proven their worth in the three games to date.
