FIR CLEARS WAY FOR POST OFFICE—Fire early Thursday morning razed the
Lucan landmark which was to have been torn down to make way for the new post.
office. Again the blaze is believed to have been the work of Lucan's elusive fire
bug, Above, fireman Alfred Broomwich hoses down ruins.
Lucan fire bug escapes;

For the 13th time inside a
year Lucan's elusive fire bug
hit again, Thursday morning
and escaped uncaptured.
Two hours after the alarm,
naught remained of another of
Lucan's ancient landmarks but
a high brick chimney and a
pile of rubblo. (Since then the
chimney has been demolished.
The budding, was once the
grocery store and dwelling of
the late Mr. Thomas Hawk-
shaw. Since then it has served
as a dry cleaning establish-
ment, a chicken hatchery, feed

last tenant in the apartment

Bond and family, who moved
out last November when the
owner, Mr. Wm. Donna of Mc-
Gillivray Township, sold the
building to the department of
public works for the erection
of Lu...an's new post office. The
last store tenants, were Wraith

pied it for a short period fol-
lowing the May 1, 1960 fire,
Residents stilt marvel that
Luc a n 's volunteer firemen
were able to confine the fire to
the one building, for only a
few feet separated the doomed
building from Mr. Don Ban-
ting's insurance building on
the right and only a driveway
from the old frame hydro
building on the left. When the
roof fell in, one wall fell
against the former building but
the firemen were able to pre-
vent it igniting. The Masonic
building, which also houses the
public library, was badly
scorched, Though some maso-
nic books were removed no•

brary.
