Pegs Tilt. Titm,Advoote, 40.44ty S.,. 116? COTTONS COMMENTS By MI- BATTEN, Sports Editor AS lePW AS THEY CAN PO The Exeter MObawks have reached the rather unenviable place in the OHA Big Bight lOop. where they cart chly go 0110 ''w4y up With their loss to the Mitchell Red Devils last vseek, the Tribe dropped d ownl into the base- merit with Mitchell and Clinton, but they get the nod for the bottom rung because they have played more games than the other two entries. This marks the first time in several seasons that the Tribe has been relegated to such a posi- tion ,and naturally many people are -aaKiilg what has happened to them, This is a difficult question to answer, and, we imagine that coach Boom Gravett and his Mo- hawk executive would be very pleased if they could come up with the answer too. However, we think there are a few good reasons for the downfall of the local entry and as we see it, there really isn't too much to got excited about. The main reason for the Tribe's poor show- ing in their last few games has been the absence of " several key players. Red Loader and Keith Stephenn have both been working nights and pick Bedard has been on the sidelines with a knee in- jury, These three defensemeh rate with the best in the league and any club would suffer if even one was missing from the lineup, let alone the entire three. Boom has been forced to move two or three forwards hack to the point and these fellows have tried hard, but just don't have the necessary experience to give the Mohawks a solid defense. However, these three players should be back in the lineup shortly, and we think the Tribe should start up the ladder, NOT E NOUGH ENTHUSIASM?, While the absence of these players has un- doubtedly hurt the Mohawks to a great extent, we also think the lack of enthusiasm on the part of some of the other members of the club has taken its toll on their play. During .the past three weeks or so, coach Gravett has never known how many men would be on hand, as several regulars failed to show for games, Naturally, some of these fellows had good. reasons why they couldn't play, but the unfortunate thing is, they never let Boom know. This meant that the Tribe was short-handed for many games, whereas they could have brought up some • juniors had they, known that players couldn't play. Personally, we think the least a player can do is let the coach know that he won't be on hand, so he can at least try to get someone to fill in the. ranks. We feel this definitely shows a lack of enthusiasm on the part of these players and un- fortunately we think it hurts the rest of the players as well. Hockey is strictly a team game and if players are missing, the other fellows sometimes take the attitude that they have been let down and so they don't give their best performance when they take to the ice either. This has been apparent to us in many games we have witnessed and we think that if the Tribe . wants to get back on the winning trail they are go- beg to have to get out and work harder. There was • a day When the very name of Exeter was enough to help beat some teams, but those days are ap- parently past and this year's team will have to play harder and give all they have if they wish to win. They will also need more practices with every player present so Boom can mould his lines together and the players will know who they are playing with and will be able to judge their line- mates' styles befgore they get into a game. WILL NEED SOME FANS TOO While we think the Tribe can stick with the best of them in this league, they will have to get some more fan support or they won't be able to stick in the league at all. The crowds so far have been disappointing to say the least and unfortunately there is no in- dication that things will improve. The largest crowd to date has been the grand total of 104, while they have played to less than 60 fans, Naturally, a losing team never does get good support, but on the same hand, a team without any support has a tough time being a good team. So, it works both ways and we think that if more fans turned out, the players would put up a better show and would show a bit more enthus- iasm. After all, it takes away some of the incentive when there isn't anyone around to cheer your ef- forts, or evert let you know that you're not playing a good game. At any rate, we think the Tribe will start to pick up their socks with the return of their experienced players and we trust the fans will get out to cheer their hometown boys on to victory, SATIN AROUND -While we have devoted most, of this space to the Mohawks, WO would be iax if we failed to give the junior Hawks a boost, This club has dropped their last three games, but two of them were by a single goal and five regu- lars were taking a Christmas vacation for the other. However, this club has plenty of hustle and are definitely one of the faSteSt skating clubs in this popular league. They put up ari excellent brand of hockey and the thrills and spills are a dime a doten. While these chaps have had comparatively good attendance at most of their games, there is ne doubt hi our mind that more people would be- come avid followers if they turned out to see the action, And, by the same token, we hope that Don Wells and Derry BOyle start putting their cohorts through a few more practices and get a better passing game going for them, 1,7rom what we have seen, this is the only thing they lack „ Our final note is oil a rather tragic theme, but it just gees to show how dangerous refereeing can be, We read an Atli& the other day where a ref slipped Mid before he could get up, one of the competitors lumped on him and killed him, flOweVer, it we'll, around here, because it happen& to be a fighting del; match that proved to he this chap's' downfall, -With only three ;a1neA played the 01-iA Sid Eight loop last week, Mitchell' Red Devils and Philipsburg OM were the only teams to make any moves in the standings, The sorpriaing Red Devils whipped the second pine Sea- forth Towners 6.3 tts vacate the league basement and move ..411 to fifth spot. The. surgi g Philipsburg Chevs picked up their fifth win of the season, Tuesday, when they whipped the sagging Ex- eter Mohawks 8.2 before a meagre crowd of 44 in Exeter, The Chevs, featuring a well- balanced attack with crisp team work, had little difficulty in subduing the Tribe, who have now lost 10 of their 13 games, Don Quehl paced the .attack for the visitors, banging in a hat-trick behind Exeter goalie, Dick McFalls, Torn Schnar added a pair and singletons were picked up by Cal Bonder- kb, r Jim Doering and George Poetker.
