! Exeter squirts made a credit-
able showing for theinSeives
:over the •weekend when they
advanced all tha way to the
finals in a squirt baseball
!tournament held m Owen Sound
on Saturday.
The relatively inexperienced
!Exeter lads, who nave played
only a couple of games all
season, beat out itarriston th
the first gam e of the series
;with a thrilling come -from -be-
hind victory in the last inning
that nipped the Ilarriston nine
110-9 and then bowed out in the
;final round to a powerful Owen
Sound nine who were held to a
vitcory by the locals.
Randy Weber hurled a mas-
terful two -hitter for the Exeter
team in the final match. The
righthander turned itt a fine
display of control during the
five -inning ball genie as be
allowed only one walk through
the whole contest while fan-
' ning a total ot eight batters.
However, the Exeter squad
inanaged to get only one hit
during the game off the fast
Owen Sound pitcher. Ricky
Weber was the only Exeter
batsman to nick the Owen
Sound firebalier for a hit.
Exeter drew first blood in
the contest for the tournament
championship in their first
time at bat when Ricky Weber
drew a walk, stole second, ad-
vanced to third on an infield
grounder and then scored after
the Owen Sound catcher drop-
ped a third strike on the next
batter and was forced to make
the throw to first.
Exeter jumped into a 2-0
lead in the third frame when
Glenn Stire walked, stole sec-
ond and then scampered home
with a run on Ricky Weber's
clutch single.
However, the strongOwen
Sound entry carne back in their
half of the third with a safe
bunt, a stolen base and an Ex-
eter error which cut the Exeter
lead to 2-1.
Owen Sound tied ithe score in
their next slime at bat when
Weber gave up his only walk
of the game, The runner stole
second base, •advanced to third
on an infield grounder and
then plated the tying run on
an attempted. pick -off at third
base that went wild.
The Exeter lads saw vitcory
change to defeat in the fifth
and finat inning of the game
when an Owen Sound runner
gained life on first with a safe
bunt, stole second base, moved
o third on an infield out, and
hen came home with the vein-
ning run of the game on a sac-
rifice squeeze play at the
late.
Exeter coach Jim "Red"
Loader heaped high praise on
iis charges for their fine per-
ormances in both the final
nd semi-final fixtures. The
championship game between
he Exeter lads and the home -
own Owen Sound team was
roadcast over Owen Sound's
cal radio station and the
cal team staged a good show
efore bowing out in the final
ame to the heavily -favoured
wen Sound nine.
