Elimination faced the Exeter club in this one but after the locals had finished playing the early innings, little doubt was left about the outcome of the game. The Greys took advantage of three hits, two walks and three Winthrop errors to move into a 5-0 second inning lead. Exe- ter added two more in the fourth for a commanding 7-1. edge and then climaxed the affair with a three -run effort in the seventh. Audrey Pooley with a double and Ruth Hendrick, Alice -Ann Nikon and Rosalie Carey with singles rounded out the locals' artillery attack, For Winthrop, pitcher Donna Hannon was the big gun. She singled in the fourth inning and added a run -producing triple in the sixth. Hannon also fanned 12 in going the seven inning rout. The relatively inexperienced !Exeter lads, who nave played only a couple of games all season, beat out itarriston th the first gam e of the series ;with a thrilling come -from -be- hind victory in the last inning that nipped the Ilarriston nine 110-9 and then bowed out in the ;final round to a powerful Owen Sound nine who were held to a vitcory by the locals. Randy Weber hurled a mas- terful two -hitter for the Exeter team in the final match. The righthander turned itt a fine display of control during the five -inning ball genie as be allowed only one walk through the whole contest while fan- ' ning a total ot eight batters. However, the Exeter squad inanaged to get only one hit during the game off the fast Owen Sound pitcher. Ricky Weber was the only Exeter batsman to nick the Owen Sound firebalier for a hit. Exeter drew first blood in the contest for the tournament championship in their first time at bat when Ricky Weber drew a walk, stole second, ad- vanced to third on an infield grounder and then scored after the Owen Sound catcher drop- ped a third strike on the next batter and was forced to make the throw to first. Exeter jumped into a 2-0 lead in the third frame when Glenn Stire walked, stole sec- ond and then scampered home with a run on Ricky Weber's clutch single. However, the strongOwen Sound entry carne back in their half of the third with a safe bunt, a stolen base and an Ex- eter error which cut the Exeter lead to 2-1. Owen Sound tied ithe score in their next slime at bat when Weber gave up his only walk of the game, The runner stole second base, •advanced to third on an infield grounder and then plated the tying run on an attempted. pick -off at third base that went wild.
