cOmeltacic spurt that highlighted
the third :and final game of the
Ontarie retailer -floats At South
River,
The victory gave the Staffa
nine the best -of -three series
two games to one And advanced
there into the Ontario interMe-
diate "C" semi-finals against
Caledonia, The third game of
the series was made ,nceessary
when South Jiver upset the
Arca team 6-4 in the scowl
game of the Paydowns Salute
day afternoon in Smell River
after Staffa had won the first
match of the series in Staffa
Down be a score of 8-2 after
six innings defeat for Staffa
seemed imminent and the 1-1-13
team supporters began thinking
of baseball's familiar "wait
next year" chant. However,
the strong Staffa nine fought
back with double tallies in each
of the seventh and eighth in -
nine and then climaxed their
spirited bid with a three -run
ninth inning that sunk South Ri-
ver.
Hero of the final game was
Staff a centre - fielder "Line"
ohfritseh who came up with a
ame-winning single in the
eieth frame that drove in Bob
Harris from second base. Rob-
fritsch sparked throughout the
entire game ashe cracked out
three singles and a double to
post a five -for -six performance
at bat, driving in four Staffa
runs.
Together the two teams
smashed out a total of 27 base
hits during the nine -inning con-
test with Staffa getting le of
them, Bob McKellar had good
day at the plate for Staffa as
he singled safely three out of
the five times he was up. Bill
Gatenby crashed a home run
and a triple to drive in three
more Staffa runs.
Bill. Murphy bingled safely
two times out of four for the
area squad while Staffa play-
ing coach Bob Norris connected
for a double in a pinch-hitting
role in the ninth inning. It was
Norris' two -bagger that tied the
game up for the Staffa crew
and he scampered home with
the winning run three pitches
later on Rohfritsch's single.
George Coveney and Laverne
"Porky" Wallace both added
singles to round out the Staffa
attack.
'Staffa used a total of three
pitchers during tbe contest.
They were unable to call on ace
lefthancier Gary Hopf who pit-
ched the day before when Staf-
fa lost 6-4. George Coveney
started on the hill for Staffa
but he was replaced in the sixth
inning by Bob Sadler, Sadler
was unable to retire the side
id Bill Gatenby was called on
to end the inning but only after
South River had, come up with
four big runs add jumped into
a large 8-2 lead. Gatenhy fin-
ished the game for Staffa and
he blanked the South River
crew through the next three
innings to register the victory.
'Take big lead
South River jumped into a
big lead with two runs in each
of the fourth and fifth innings
and they counted another four
runs in the disastrous sixth to
build up an 8-2 lead.
Staffa fought back with a pair
of runs in the .seventh inning
on a walk to Charley Westman',
a South River infield error on
Gatenby and two back-to-back
singles by Coveney and Bob Mc-
Kellar.
Staffa climbed to within two
runs of the leaders in the
eighth frame when they were
given an assist. by South River
who put two men on base on
an error and a walk. Bill Ga-
tenby then unloaded a tremen-
dous three -base clout to drive
in both runs and give Staffa
their fifth and sixth tallies.
Last -inning rally
In the last inning, first -base-
men. Bob McKellar singled with
one man out. The next Stafia
batter struck out but Bill Mur-
phy came through with a stand-
up double that put men on se-
cond and third. Up came play-
ing cdach Bob Norris as a
pinch -hitter and he promptly
smashed a line double into left
field to plate both runs and
draw the local nine even with
the home team.

Ix) a 6-4 victory over liensall
In the third game of the Huron -
Perth finals played in Staffa
Wednesday night.
The win for Staffa gave them
a 2.1 bulge over the Hensall
nine in Inc 1-1-P finals. The
two clubs are having difficulty
in arranging playoff dates for
the league finals since Staffa
is engaged in OSA playoffs
and Hensall intermediates are
also advancing into Ontario
playoffs,
Errors spelled the downfallI
of the Hensall crew as they
came up with four glaring mis-
cues in the last two innings
when. Stan tallied all six of
their runs to give the home
team a total of three unearned
runs during the five -inning con-
test.
Hensall had built up a com-
manding 4-0 lead in the first
frames but Staffa came back
with four in their half of the
fourth to tie the genie up,
'Hensel' were unable to add
to their total. in the fifth but
Staffa exploded for three base
bits anci, aided by two Hensall
errors, plated two unearned
runs to win the contest going
away.
Bob Sadler, the Huron -Perth
president, handled hurling du-
ties for Staffa and picked up
the win. The Staffa merchant
fired a seven -hitter at the Hen -
sail nine during the five in-
nings he worked.
Gerry Bell started his first
game in over a month for Hen-
sel as he has been out of prev-
bus playoff action with an in-
jured leg. The Heesall lefty
tossed a neat one -hitter for
three innings before the home
team got to him .in the fourth
and fifth for another six base
knocks.
Bob Norris, Staffa playing
coach, led his team at the
plate by cracking out two
singles in three times at bat.
"Porky" Wallace crashed a
two -run double in the fourth
for Staffa for the only extra -
base hit of the game. Single
hits were registered by "Linc"
Rohfritsch, Bill Murphy, Bob
Sadler and Frank Elliott.
Bruce Moir paced the Hen -
salt nine in their losing cause
by smacking two singles in
three trips to the plate. Dennis
Mock, Bill Shaddick, Bruce

McNaughton all colleted sin-
