The action followed the 2-2 tie registered by 'the students and the teaching staff. The staff claimed the trophy on their superior play and sports- manship; while the students felt they should have the tro- phy, claiming unfair tactics staff.by Sho Teacher Andrew Dixon, who donated. the trophy, made. a joint presentation to the two team captains, in the hope of settling the conflict, but it brought out a bitter quarrel, and as yet the outcome has not been known. The game itself was a bit- terly fought affair, and tem- pers broke out several times. At one stage in the game, a wild free-for-all ensued, and referees Don Cann and Dennis Mock had considerable trouble restoring order, The fight apparently result- ed when one of the students (who flunked his agriculture) Jumped Ron Bogart, ag-science teacher. Ron appeared to have the assailant under control, when several other students came to Join the fray. This proved too much for Mr. Dixon (another science teacher) anct he strode',,in, to assist his fallen colleague. In no time at. all, the two had things under control, and the entire student team was held at hay, However, the two referees (naturally they were students) apparently had been turned the other way during the fight, and 'they erroneously sent the two teachers to cool off in the .sin bin, Itchy' team lead league. Exeter's °Itchy Six", de- fending champions 'of the Men's Inter -town League, are waging a determined bid to repeat Iasi, year's feat. At present, the. Itchy hunch have a nine -point lead over their closest rivals, the. Gode- rie h. A .team. However, the Exeter six have rolled one less game than their Dearest rivals, and that game is with the sixth place Wingbam Wad. The league leader's success le by no means a one-man show, as five of the eight mem- bers carry averages over the 200 mark, arid two are Just slightly under the figure. Bob Osgooct is the leader its the average department with his respectable 224. Don Gra. vett carries a 216 average, just One More than Lorne Haugh, and Bob Nicol is another point back At 214, Jack Fuller rand DUt, the. 200-or.better group with his 210. Despite the. fine averages eareled by the Exeter howlers, they are far off the dazzlitig pace set by Bert Harris, Gode. rich. The Mehl. However, they chose to toy with the young- sters for some time, and didn't bother to score until nud-waY through the first period. George Wright. was the marksman on the play, after faking a perfect pass from Mr, Bogart. The two sailed right through the porous defense, and firect the hall into the nets past Mervyn Taylor. Apparently realizing that it would. be no fun to completely walk a\vay with the contest, the staff let down their fine defensive play and let the stu- dents have a few whacks at the ball. Laurie Illingworth, who ap- peared to have skate runners on the bottom. of his. shoes, WA J the marksman on the fist tally for the students. goalie,Staff IVIr. Dixon, gave Illingworth the whole net to shoot at, figuring the youngster would probably miss, but 11- lingworth rose to the OCCAZi011 and fired the b 11 intoIbe net, as the entire' 'staff 'team sat along the boards and watched the action. The goal didn't faze the staff in the least, and they decided to give the students another goal to help them along. This time ,it was Jim Russell who was able to take advantage of the gift, and he flipped the, ball Into the net past Mr, Dixon. Following the 2.1lead by the, students, the staff decided to get right down to work and, play the way they were capable' of cloing. They pulled their! sub -goalie and put in regular Ken Ottewell. Mr. Dixon. was then moved onto his defensive spot, where he was able to show his fancy footwork and. bruising body - checking play. The teachers took control O() the contest and again hemmed the students in their own end. The youngsters even added several extra players, but even the illegal 'tactics were not enough to stop the staff. Mrs. Roger Emery, home economics teacher, displayed her excellent sweeping tech- niques to register the sinal goal of the contest. The play was set up by Mr. .Bogart again, and the distaff Member of the staff made no mistakes as the pass came rolling out in front of the net,, The students Pulled their goalie and iced their entire 45 -man team in the dying Min- utes, but the staff ,would not 'lluclge and lleld their grounds for the tie. ?'receding the game, the students and staff enjoyed a skating party and returned to (lit school for a dance, where the presentation took place, (ED note: Despite the un- pleas2ntries described above - A good time was had by all, and it was all in good f)1n.) topped the tournament for toP money with handicaps added. His 1126 total plus handicap were enough to shove him into first place past Fuller, who ended up in the number two spot. Ted Wright and Don Wells copped the number three and four spots respectively. In the hidden score depart.. ment, Make Gifford and Al Flynn split a case of coca cola, while Bill Wright, 15 - year -old son of Ted Wright, won a case of pepsi-cola do- nated by Tuckey BeverageS, Exeter, Jim Haley, Bob Osgood, Jim F a ir bairn and Simon Nagel won a box of chocolates each for their hidden scores.
