.A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT ANP HOWE!
The recent injury to Detroit's perennial all-
Star—Gordie Howe—has come as a bad blow to
avid Detroit fans in the area, but the loss was
perhaps taken hardest by Gordie's munber one
fan in Exeter—Jim Russell.
Jim was a rink -side witness to the crash
between Howe and Eddie Shack of the Toronto
Maple Leafs in Toronto last Wednesday. It was
thfirst time that Jim had sten a "live" NHL
gime, and the trip was a Christmas present from
his brother, Bob.
Naturally, being an avid Howe fan, Jim was
interested in seeing the big right winger, perform,

Shack apparently caught a last-minute
glimpse of Howe, and put his stick up to protect
hmself before the collision. The Detroit star went
crashing to the ice and in Bob's words, "there
was blood and gore all over the floor". Shack re-
ceived a five-minute major for high sticking, while
Howe was taken to a Toronto hospital for treat-
ment of a severe head gash and a concussion.
The incident brought to light that there is
a bit of a grudge between these two NHL players.
Shack stated that Howe was "out to get me". He
added that the Detroit winger "was always going
for me with his stick when I was with New York".
It will be interesting to watch future games
between the Leafs and Red Wings when Howe re-
turns to action, to see if this grudge will bring
any future fireworks between the two husky
players.
We certainly don't suggest that Howe will
be out to get Shack, but we doubt if this grudge
will die over night. We certainly think that. Shack
should change his style of play a bit, and keep
hi'S head up, especially when Howe is on the ice.
Gordie has an enviable :record. when it comes to
the rough stuff, and. more than one player in the
NHL bears evidence of hit .title as `champion of,
the world—on skates",
Leapin' Lou Fontinato, who used to be one
of the roughest characters in the big time, has
cooled off considerably sine his altercation with
Howe a seaSOlt;or two ago. Howe took exception to
Lou's tactics, and promptly bopped him on the
beak, with the result that Fontinato sat out a few
games with a broken nose.
Several NHL rookies have tried to make a
favorable impression on their coaches and fans
by dumping some of the "big names" in the league.
However, most of them have learned the hard way
that these stars haven't reached the top by leaving
themselves open to the bull -like antics of some
brash young rookie.

- We haven't heard any reports that Jack
Adams, manager of 'the Wings, made over the in-
cident. Adams was quoted at the beginning of the
season at being in favor of the fights and rough
play of some of the teams. He said it was just the
players' way of letting off steam. This could turn
into a tongue-in-cheek statement if Howe ends up
on the losing end of any more of this rough play.
His loss would certainly let the steam out of the
Wings alright, because as Howe goes—so go the
Red Wings.
CANADIAN PRESTIGE GETS SHOT IN ARM
The Winnipeg Maroons arrived home this
week after a successful tour of Czechoslovakia. The
Maroons ran up a record of seven wins, two ties
and one loss. As the Canadians left Europe, of-
ficials of both countries had nothing but high
praise and compliments for each other.
Although we realize that it's best to "let a
sleeping dog lie", we can't help but point out the
noticeable difference that this tour had over the
recent tour by the Chatham Maroons. The Chat-
ham squad received unfavorable publicity through-

The only difference we can find between
the 010 Maroon teams is that the Chatham version
lest in their lour. However, by the Sounds of the.
recent remarks after the Czech tour, we wonder
who did lose. Naturally, we know the Czechs lost,
but their statements were a far Cry from those
heard when Canada lost.
