E;Iltor e With our jaunt to Port Dover last week with tice Weati-Ilderton Combines, we have made the grand Our of all the arenas in the Southwestern OHA Fr those fans who don't get a chance to 011ow the ,Tribe on the road, we make a brief re Ott on. some of the teams, facilities, and general eamments on this new league, We don't think we •are going out on a limb too einich viten we call the Ingersoll Marlands the team to beat. This classy squad has some top-notch players al their roster, and several have seen Senior "B" action. The Marlands have only been beaten once this season and have won 10 games. We'll have to pick the Mohawks as the team that stands the best chance to overthrow the Mar - lends. The Exeter team is the only other "A'club .fei this league, and naturally should be rated above the rest o fthe "B" teams, With some stroeger de- fensive play. the Tribe should make it interesting come playoff time. Aylmer should end up In the third spot, but Lucan-Ilderton could be the number three team if they can get a bit of defensive help, The Combines have been playing without any regular defensernen in their last few games. They have some prolific scorers and get good netminding from Barnes and Scarborough. Delhi and Port Dover wi1T battle it out for the bottom positions in the league, but both these clubs are better than their record indicates, They have the biggest teams in the league, and perhaps their main difficulty Comes from the fact that some of their players forget about the puck and play the man too muSeh. :Either of these teams could surprise the lead- ers at any time, and they are both capable of win- uing their share of games. Actually, this is a strong league and these teams are fairly evenly matched and anything could happen before the end of the season—and it probably LQ.CALS-ON SHORT END IN ACCOMMODATION Although they are among the top teams in the league,. the Mohawks and Combinesare at the bottom of the list when it comes to dressing room facilities, Ingersoll and Aylmer have the best accom- modation, and their rooms are large and comfortable. Port Dover has just cornpleted a new part to their arena and the dressing rooms there are spac- ious and well-equipped. Unfortunately we don't see any solution to the Exeter situation, and although we call it one of the poorest in the league, it is not a serious handicap. We merely mention it as a point of interest for our readers. Although most fans would expect Exeter to have the smallest ice surface, this is not the case. Port Dover holds this distinction. Their ice surface • is both shorter and narrower than Exeter's. However, the renovation that has taken place at Port Dover has left room for additional ice space, and perhaps When more fundsare available, this will come abolut, --All the teams in the league have comfortable 'halls for the fans to move to between periods. Ex- eter has the most room with the use of the gym, with most of the other arenas just having over -size --e0htrancesto their arenas. SOMETHING SHOULD BE .DONE• The only real fault we have to find with any of the setups around the league is the public address Systena right here in Exeter. It is practically impos- sible for the fans to hear Gord Baynham, due to the, poor equipment. Although some may think this is not a serious handicap, we will have to differ. We think it distracts -Vrom a• game when the fans cannot hear who scored the goals for the teams competing. This is especially poignant this year, with the ...Tribe in a new league and with new players perform- *14.,jeleeethe local arena. In pt years the fans knew. est ofvOttteeeplayers onlfte teams that played here, but now thertbwe teams are only here twice, we think it is time something was done about the system. At the arena on Wednesday, the Mohawks conducted 'a draw for a basket of groceries, but no One could understand the announcement and se the groceries were left in the office. It just happened that Derry Boyle was in the office And asked what the number was, and when he checked his own ticket, he was the winner. This was a fluke and people can hardly be blamed if they dont buy tickets for something they can't win—just because they can't hear the winning e ;lumber. (How about a kid carrying a large card around the ice with the number next time so the fans Will see the number—unless they fix the PA?) We also think it is a goo'd idea to announce the players and their number so fans can pick out Some of the players they hear abOut, and cahewatch for theni on the. ice, This could possibly help to stir up more interest in the game , and, keep the fans coining back. • Although this announcing equipment is poor, it is ha as deplorable as the sound that eminates from therecord player for the playing of "God Save The Queen", At the second last garne, the record was -broken and arena mariaget Alvin Willert had it started be - fere he realized this. This wee extutable, but the •ound on Wednesday at the Ingersoll game wat not. If it is the fault of the reathine, we suggest t it either be fixed before it is'played agahi,'or be played at all. The way it is !q0W, it is actually 'sgradt and it would be far beth r without it. The win over Lucas was worth four points to the Imperials, Mohawks strengthened The Mohawks, who play a honte-and-home series with the Port Dover Sailors this week, s have added two new players to • their lineup to give them some needed defensive strength.
