MOHAWKS HOLIDAY IS OVER.
Nothing else seems to be very important
these days with Christmas parked on our doorsteps,

H . , just
12 -day layoff things should start to pop.
Mohawks get back into action in their home
rink on December 26 when something new will be
tried. For the first time in,
ears the tribe will hold
Y
a Saturday afternoon game on Boxing Day with the
hope a large crowd will be in attendance. Philips-
burg Chevs, who will provide the opposition for the
locals, will be out in full force to try and halt the
Mohawks. Reports have it that three bus loads of
fans are accompanying the team. If the reports are
true, it should be a colourful afternoon. Wednesday
night (December 23) Exeter will travel to New Ham-
burg for their first game of the home -and -home
series.
The draw for the free trip to Tampa, Florida,
will not go on as scheduled Boxing Day as advertised
in last week's paper. With Christmas and the New
Year right around the corner, the Mohawk executive
thought it would be better to have the draw later
on. It has been decided to definitely hold it on Janu-
ary 16, 1960. It's a Saturday night and Forest Lake -
sides will provide the opposition.
COLLINGS A PLEASANT SURPRISE •
Tom Collings, the intermediate league's num-
ber one sniper at the present time is certainly a
pleasant surprise to the management of the Lucan-
Ilderton Combines. Collings, who last year at this
time had scored only three goals and collected three
assists, has really broken loose to become the loop's
top marksman. The classy centre has 19 goals and
12 assists in nine games. The L -I centre is setting
something similar to the pace set a year ago this
week by Mary Shantz and Ken Doig who had 32 and
30 points respectively. Doig, this year is the tribe's
second highest marksman with 18 points on eight
goals and 10 assists while Shantz of Mitchell Red
Devils is sixth in the team's individual scoring re-
cords with seven points based on four goals and
three assists.
Forest Lakesides have 'three prominent men
high in the league scoring race. "Tussy" Dunham,
their top man, boasts 21 points on 11 goals and 10
assists. Young Jimmy Bloomfield, fourth in the
standings, has helped on 10 goals and has scored
nine times. Dunham and Bloomfield have only ap-
peared in six of , the club's eight games. A third
Forest member in the person of playing coach Stan
Ulrich is also in the top ten. Next to Collings' 19,
Philipsburg's Jerry Steffler has potted 12 goals to
place second in the goal production department.
NHL HAS MANY STORIES
Bronco Horvath, who is still leading in the
National Hockey League point race, says that the
element of surprise is helping him score goals this
season. He insists that his great scoring splurge is
due to the fact that he never tries the same thing
twice. When going in on a defenceman you shouldn't
always shoot or try to go around him. If you do
shoot the first time, stickhandle past him • on the
second try ... Johnny Bower, although replaced
by Ed Chadwick in the nets this week, is having his
greatest year in hockey with the Leafs . .. Boston
Bruins' veteran goalie, Harry Lumley, Who is a na-
tive of Owen Sound, is the heavyweight champion
of the National Hockey League. Burly Harry tips the
scales at 226 pounds .. . The Red Wings found a
catch when they picked up Murray "Moe" Oliver.
This Oliver is also a fine ball player. So fine in fact
that he was offered a tryout with Cleveland Indians
of the American League. The Detroit ace didn't take
up the offer. He's a skilled carpenter on the off
season ... "Toe" Blake calls this year's edition of
the Canadiens the best Montreal team yet. Have you
ever noticed the way Gordie Howe keeps blinking?
Gordie says that his physician told him that it was
his way of releasing nervous tension and there's
nothing to worry about, The blinking act is really
bad in the playoffs when the tension is the greatest
The way the NHL race is tightening up, the
league could set a record for crowds. The Hawks
are finally off and running. It's good to see Bobby
Hull in high gear. Watch out, Bronco!
Before we sign off to enjoy two Christmas
dinners (one in Kitchener and the other in Exeter)
we would like to pass on a very sincere thought to
all of the people we're connected with throughout
the year in wishing a

loss and three ties.
Lloyd Moore and "Whitey" Il-
lingworth each fired a pair of
goals for Exeter against Oak-
ridge Acres Monday night in Lu -
can. The locals held a 3-0 first
period lead but saw it dwindle
away as Oakridge tied up the
contest 3-3 by the end of the se-

Red Devils
The red-hot Philipsburg Chevs
rolled back from a 4-3 seconde-
riod deficit to defeat Mitchell
Red Devils 5-4 in a scheduled
WOAA Group 1 game played in
Mitchell.
Jerry McMillan, the centre of
controversy between the two
clubs for playing right over the
past two months, fired an unas-
sisted goal at 8:08 of the third
period to put Philipsburg on
even terms. From there, Calvin
Hondri'ck went on to sink his
second marker of the night at
17:31 which eventually turned out
to be the winner.
Captain Ron Ehart and Wal-
lace Becker scored the other
Chev tallies.
Bill "Izzy" Powell, Pigeon,
"Link" Rohfritsch and Gord

Mitchell goals.

Bowlers vie
for turkeys
Free turkeys were the main
object of bowlers throughout the
Exeter Men's Bowling League
this week as enthusiasts of the
alley game put a little "extra"
into their efforts in order to try
to win one of the birds.
Ten turkeys were given away.
Four were won on the hidden
score basis. Four more were
copped by the high single and
triple rollers in each "A" and
"B" grouping. Two were won by
the high single and triple roll-
ers (with handicap) over both
groupings.
Spares and Bankmonts were
team winners of glass turkeys.
Naturally, both entries were
pleased with their winnings. How-
ever, puzzlement has entered
the picture as no one of either
club seems to know how long to
cook the glass birds!
Spares had a team total pin -
fall of 3372 while Bankmonts
chalked -up 3315 in the "B"
group.
Hidden score prizes were won
by B. Dobson (421) of Co -Op, G.
Mason (478) Tradesmen, A. Dar-
ling (508) Co -Op and W. Watson
(563) Upstarts.
High single an triple with
handicaps were copped by T.
MacDonald (303 plus 25-328)
and J. Carey (645 plus 102-747)
respectively.
"A" group high single and
triple winners were Jim Crocker
(325) and Jack Fuller (766). In
the "B", A. Meikle (295) and
Larry Rumpel (656) looked after
the single and triple awards.
Rounding out the week's win-
ners with free bowling awards
were T. MacDonald (303) with
high. single, Neil Redman, high
triple and J. Gibson for hidden
score,
Windmills and Upstarts each
lead their respective "A" and
"B" groupings with 41 points.
Milkmen and Big Six hold down
the runner-up spot in the "A"
on 36 points while Imperials and
Larry's Supertest are deadlocked
for second in the "B" with 35.
Edseleires, Upstarts, Milkmen
and Windmills were all feta'
point winners over the week's
play.

Defends Flyers
To the editor,
It must be very gratifying for
the editor to print an article
such as was read in last week's
T -A concerning the Zurich Fly-
ers. It is very easy to sit on
someone once they are down and
I feel if Boom Boom is the
sportsman he pretends to be, he
will think over the damage he
has done to your, paper by drag-
ging the people of Zurich by
means of their hometown club
through the mud.
Perhaps it was possible for
Zurich to import a team such as
Exeter did a few years back
and so go into debt for thousands
of dollars as they did and go
crying to the town council and
citizens alike for support and
money, etc., but Zurich knew
where they stood and for the
love of hockey alone entered a
team in the WOAA to try to
keep hockey alive in Zurich.
The night Mr. Gravett speaks
of when the juveniles played
against Exeter, because of in-
juries and sickness to the inter-
mediate players, perhaps the
juveniles made too gaixi a show-
ing against the men from Exeter.
If he would kindly remember
the score was 11-7. Rather than
call the game after Exeter ar-
rived, Zurich iced players that
gave the Mohawks something to
think about, especially when the
youngsters gave back everything
they received from their so-
called superiors.
I think the Flyers should be

By virtue of their 9.7 victory
over Mitchell Red Devils Monday
night, Forest Lakesidee have
caused a three-way traffic jam
for first place in the WOAA
Group 1 intermediate hockey
league with Exeter Mohawks and
Lucan-Ilderton Combines.
Exeter did have the top rung
all to themselves after a 5-2
decision over Lucan - Ilderton
Combines a week ago, However,
since then the standings have
been readjusted and because of
the Zurich iyithdrawal, each
team that didn't play their regu-
lar scheduled number of games
with the Flyers were credited
with two-point victories for the
unplayed games.
Forest was given two wins
and four points in this category
while Mitchell Red Devils and
Lucan - Ilderton Combines each
grabbed one win and two points,
Philipsburg Chevs and Exeter
Mohawks are the only clubs in
the loop which hasn't gone
through the first ten games of
the schedule. A home and home
series which starts in New Ham-
burg Wednesday and winds up
in Exeter on Boxing Day should
put the two back on even keel
with the rest of the league,
