She' was chief instructress at a bowl- ing clinic held at the local lanes Thursday. Watching her are, from left, Agnes Appleton, Edna Deitz, Terry Heywood and Dorothy Elder. —TA Photo Pp Y Y Average below 175? Take Mabel's advice, girls you CAN raise it 20 points Want to improve your bowling average by 20 pins, ladies? Most women (men, too) can do it by eliminating some elemen- tary bad habits, says Mabel Mc- Dowell, "Canada's Mrs. Bowler", who was in charge of the first instruction clinic held. at Exeter Bowling Lanes Thursday. Affable Mabel should know because she's won about every title available during the last 10 years. Tier overall average for 20 years is 231 and she holds the Canadian record of a 251 average for one season. Current- ly, she's champion, of CBC -TV's 5 -pin tournament in Toronto. Every bowler can improve his game with a little practice and concentration," says the champ. "You'll get more pleasure . out of the game, too, as well as helping your team win the tro- phy" How to do it What are the five worst faults among bowlers? 1. "For 'most people, .it's lack of follow through," says Mabel, McLean rink wins 'spiel By MORLEY SANDERS The Spoon bonspiels were won by B. McLean's team, made up of L. Seigner, 'D. Parsons and F. Tilley and G. Busche's team consisting of R. Snell, H. King and C. Brintnell. Seven teams participated. Three skips are still undefeat- ed in the Jones, MacNaughton draw, They are H. Pollen, A. Cowen Thank You TO the ratepayers of Exeter who voted for me on Monday. Ralph Bailey "That's 'the most important thing aboyt bowling. Keep your arm straight with a completely relax- ed wrist, elbow and shoulder: release the ball close to the floor, and follow :through with your arm—right from the shoulder— directed. at the point of aim as you rise to an upright position, Let that arm stretch right out." 2. "Many 'bowlers dont bend enough. Bend down and stretch out, 3. "Too often bowlers fail to get a straight delivery—their arm swings across the body. The ball should be kept as close to the side as possible." 4. "Don't palm the ball—grip it by the ends of your fingers and thumb. The •way to correct this fault is to put' your thumb on top of the ball. With the proper grip, there should be an air space in the 'palm of your hand." 5. "Lots of bowlers still throw off the wrong foot. A right-handed bowler should end up with the left foot forward and a left-hand- ed bowler with the right foot out." Does yours compare? Mabel says a good average for women is between 175 and 200 while the men should be between 200 and 225. "The big gest reason people don't score that high is because• they don't follow through on their swing. You really have to carry the ball out to the end of your arm." What about the corner pin, Mabel? "I tell bowlers to imagine the three -pin is still standing and to aim between the two and three. That way, there's less chance of putting the ball in the gutter." Should you bowl across the alley to get that two -pin? "Not all the way across, Just a bit to the opposite side of centre." How do you avoid hoadpin trouble, Mabel? ' "I wish I could. That's some- thing every bowler has to con- tend with. The best advice I can give is to take half a step for- ward or back on your approach. If that doesn't work, move about three inches to the left or right of yottr' regular throwing posi- tion." Do you put "stuff" on the ball, Mabel? "Not deliberately but I get a little break just before the ball reaches the pins. That collies naturally because of my, follow through. Once your swing be- comes consistent you can allow for it." She loves it Do you like bowling, Mabel? "I've been at it for over 30 years and it's the best game there is. Doctors will tell you it's one of the most healthful exercises you can take—particu larly if you • hretch out to make those muscles work. It keeps you in wonderful shape." Mabel herself is living testimony to that. The local clinic was one of hundreds being staged across the province by the Bowling Proprietors of. Ontario. Instruct- resses on Thursday included Mrs. Marj Bentley, Toronto; Marion Pusey, and Mrs, Var- belle Densmore, both of Sarnia, Accompanying the ladies were Don Graham, Sarnia, president of BPAO, and Jim Grant, To- ronto, executive director of the association. About 40 ladies at- tended the clinic. Chevs-Zurich — Continued from page 8 Gascho, Calquhoun, Lee, Suplat, McKinley.
