-
vocation, which comprises es teamsfrom Zurich, Forest,
xeter, Mitchell,Lucan-liderton and Philipsburg, E P g> is
still far off the beaten track of getting solidly settled
away.
Back on November 16 when the six -team loop
swung into action, six clubs boastingthree different
_.
' classifications of play became active. Out of this
group only Exeter iced an lntermediate "A" entry.
Although considerable squawking was heard from the
other five league representatives at the time, Exeter
was more or less compelled to stick to their guns
because of player reasons. This they did. Now after
the clubs have completed six games, Mitchell has
joined the local squad as an "A" entry. This leaves
Lucan-Ilderton Combines, who have looked stronger
than the "A" clubs so far this season, and Forest
Lakesides to battle it out for the "B" title. Zurich
Flyers and Philipsburg Chevs will settle the group
homebrew honours.
Mitchell, who have played under the "B"
classification for a number of games now, are having
four points taken away from them in the ^ standings
because they defeated Exeter and the L -I Combines
under illegal player use.
According to Alf Lockridge, business manager
of the WOAA, player rights were straightened out at
a weekend meeting in Toronto, For some reason (un-
known to this turner) players travelling as far away
as Goderich have been granted to play for the
Mitchell club on a free gratis basis. In other words,
they don't use up any import or waiver certificate.
Legally, an "A" entry is granted six imports or
waivers. After gaining information on player use
last year 'from the present governing body of the
WOAA and OHA, we can't see how Mitchell has
legal rights to a number of their obtained help.
Unless we miss our guess, before the season is over,
it looks as though plenty of midnight oil will be
burned over the protest table.
However, despite the way the arguments turn
out, local and district fans should be treated to some
excellent hockey before the season ends. The Mo-
hawks and Red Devils have been through these play-
offs before and fans, know what to expect. Mitchell
is still smarting from the four straight losses they
suffered against the tribe in last year's group final.
This year they intend to make a change in the out-
come.
•
The way the L -I Combines are rolling, barring
injuries, they could skate right through to the On-
tario title. The club has depth, size and plenty of
potential. Every line on the club is scoring its share
of the goals. By the way, Combines are in town Fri-
day night in a battle for first place with the Mohawks.
It should be a dandy. The L -I six downed Exeter 6-2
in their only meeting to date.
In the homebrew entries, Philipsburg seems
to have an edge on Don Hesse's Zurich Flyers but
the season is' still young. Once the Flyers get straight-
ened away in goal and with the rest of their playing
personnel, they could make it rough for Philipsburg.
On the other hand, the Chevs, who like the big ice
surface, feel that they can take Zurich quite handily
at home. Apparently, it's playing in the smaller Hen-
sall arena that bothers them. The first meeting be-
tween the two was won by Philipsburg in Hensall•
7-3.
CUFF CLEANERS—Quite a surprising note has taken
place on the baseball front. After all the season's
predictions about big league trades, not one has
been made by the New York Yankees ... Maybe
Casey intends to stand pat. In our books, it's very
doubtful though! ... The ladies' high single has
fallen twice within the past two weeks. A couple of
weeks back, Phyllis Haugh broke the mark with a
307 effort. This week, Joan Parsons took over the
leadership with a 310 performance. Nice going gals!
... Speaking on bowling, the turkey rolls are right
around the corner. Several prize birds are being
offered at the alleys to league participants next week
... Curling is really in high gear at the local
arena. While waiting for the cars to leave for a
hockey match last week, we heard one skip holler to
a partner, "Nice rock, George, but it's a little too
heavy!" Just as he hollered the last two words, the
rock breezed through the house about 30 miles an
hour! . . Toronto Maple Leafs are surprising every-
one. We think even Imlach. They're ahead of the
schedule set
up for them by the manager -coach of
the blue and white and they continue to amaze the
fans with their spirited performances such as their
last effort against Montreal . . We picked the
Mapleos for second and we have a hunch they'll
finish there!

Mitchell Red Devils have been
declared an intermediate "'A"

The Red Devils, who entered
the league as intermediate "B"

gible. However, by moving up
into "A" company, they have
been granted Jack Meriam and
Cord Walters of Goderich; Ernie
Little and Gordon Wall of St.

Bob Doig of Seaforth as free
men, This changes the Mitchell
waiver and import setup consi-
derably as now they can bring in
more players to help them.

Vic Neil pumped home four
goals Friday night against Ex-

a 12-6 decision and first , place
in the Shamrock Minor Hockey
League standings.
Exeter and Lucan, until this
game, were the only two unde-
feated clubs in the loop. By
virtue of their win, Lucan moves
out into undisputed possession
of first place by three points.
Backing up Neil's one-man
show was Barry Black who reg-
istered the hat trick. Jerry
Harrigan also slapped in a pair
for the winners while single
markers came off the sticks of
Norm Sceli, Graham Thompson
and Frank Eagan.

Club shows supremacy
The Lucan six showed plenty
of supremacy in this one as they
skated hard and used superior
passing plays to run up the lop-
sided count. The winners left
the ice at the end of the first
period with a 4-1 lead. They
matched a three -goal output by
Exeter in the second and then
swarmed in for the kill by out-
scoring the locals 5-2 in the final
session.

An explosive five goal attack
in an extra 10 -minute overtime
period in Lucan Friday night,
gave Lucan - Ilderton Combines
a decisive 9-5 victory over
Mitchell Red Devils.
The victory moved the Com-
bines into a first place tie with
Exeter Mohawks.
A pair of goals by winger Stu
O'Neil with singles from Bob
Gauthier, Pete Findley and the
league's leading Scorer, Tom
Collings, were the big ones.
After the two clubs had bat-
tled through 60 urinates of hockey
and were deadlocked 4-4, it took
the Combines only one minute
and two seconds to go out in
front again. Young Bobby Gauth-
ier was the triggerman on this
play as he polished off a three-
way play with Tom Collings and
Stu O'Neil,
O'Neil pushed his club two tip
at the 6:15 mark with some help
from • Gauthier and aggressive
Don Fletcher.
Centre Gordon "Butch" Wall
