from Ontario Department of
Agriculture specialists.
Scale insects — They are flat,
oval or circular and covered
with a hard, smooth scale, Wash
smooth -leaved plants with soapy
water to remove scales. Add 2
teaspoons of 4O% nicotine sul-
phaleto a h gallon of wash.
Use a clo or a soft -bristled
brush,
Aphids—Nicotine sulphate and
soap is also effective for the
control of aphids. Malathion may
also be used, but not in the
house. Take the plants outside
for treatment.
Two -spotted spider mite—Try
liquid rotenone concentrate, era -
mite or malathion against this
tiny mite.
Cyclamen mite — This mite
causes curled leaves. African
violets and cyclamen are the
favorite stamping grounds. Mal.
athion is effective. Use the
manufacturer's dosages.

One good thing to remember:l
! when new house plants arc
brought to the home, keep them
in a separate place until you,
are sure that they are insect-'
free.
Proper storage
protects clothes
Despite the continued warm
weather late in the fall this
year, it's a safe bet you won't
be needing summer things again
this year. They should be stored
properly now; before the snow
boots, woolens and aur coats
need the space they're occupy-
ing in clothes closets and draw.
ers.
Specialists with the 1I o 'in c
Economics Service of the On-
tario Department of Agriculture
have this to say about storing
the straw sandals, slippers and
bags so popular in recent years.
They should he clean and this
can be done with soap or deter-
gent and water.
Don't s a tura 1 e them with
water. — use the thick, foamy
part of the suds and a soft
brush. Wipe off the suds, rinse
carefully with a clean, damp
cloth and dry with a saft,- absorb-
ent cloth such as an old Turk-
ish towel. Stuff both shoes and
hags with paper, being careful
not to push them out of shape.
Some, though not all, white
plastic bags and belts clean up
well with the same• soap and
water treatment. The important
thing is to use water sparingly
and keep the lining dry.
Bags made of synthetics should
wash tve11, though there is some
danger of the lining shrinking.
Beach toys, bathing caps and
shoes of rubber are apt to stick
together during storage. Wash
and dry them well, then dust
both the inside and out with a
fine coating of talcum powder be-
fore wrapping to store.
Starched cottons provide a real
feast for silver fish, certain
beetles and other pests. So wash
these, dry thoroughly and then
store unstarched. Be certain the
clothes are bone dry before stor-
ing, since damp clothes mildew
very quickly.
Woolen bathing suits should be
clean and sealed in tightly clos-
ed bags, to be safe from moths.

Mrs, Leslie Adams gave a
