A large number of friends at-
tended the funeral of the late
Mrs. Tfareld N. Butler :off Lucan,
pastor of the Pentecostal Church,
Exeter, where the funeral serv-
ice was .conducted by the Rev.
Samuel Fredrickson of Galt, last
Friday. Six ministers acted:as

at the Medway School last Fri-
day night,
John Conlin of Luean and Dan
O'Neil of the Royal Military Col-
lege, Kingston, were among the
44 Grade 13 graduates to re-
ceive a diploma and Jane Steaey,
Keith O'Neil, Kathleen Mcllhar-
gey and Bob Stanley were among
the 112 grade 12 students to re-
ceive diplomas,
Entertainment was provided by
the Medway Concert Band direct-
ed by H. A, Clark. Hugh Conlin
was the only Lucan member of
the band.

A large .attendance filled the
Lucan Public ,School kinder-
garten last Tuesday night for the
Biddulph Township Public Speak-
ing contest, when five boys and
litre girls competed,
Mrs. E. A. Busche and Mr. Ce-
cil Wilson of the pliDHS staff
acted as ,judges, awarding first
prizes to Donnie Wallis' of the
Granton school who spoke on
'Bells" and to Sharon Van Bus -
■ell, of SS 6 (Separate) 'whose
topic was "Safety."
Runners-up were Roger Black
of the Lucan PS who spoke on
the "Red Cross" and Betty Peck-
ham of SS No. 5 who chose
"Good Grooming" as her topic.
Money was donated by LUCAN
and the Biddulph Council for the
prizes which consisted of a book
and a silver dollar for the win-
ners and a book and. a silver
fifty cent piece for the runners-
up. Inspector H. G. Schlotzhauer
trade the presentations.
Other contestants and their to-
pics were Frank Vanner "New-
foundland"; John Forner, ""See -
Ing -eye Dog"; Robert Donaldson,
'`Casey Jones"; Ann Culbert,
''Edison"; Carol Stalker, "Jack
Miner"; and Jean Marie Lankin
who also chose "Jack Miner."
While the judges were de-

numbers were presented by the
Lucan,' Granton and SS No. 1
schools.
Principal Wesley Clow of Lu-
ean presided for the meeting.
John S. Thompson'
first war veteran
John Stewart Thompson, 76,
of Main St, South, Lucan, died
Monday, November 2. He lay at
rest in the Beaton funeral home,
Markdale, until 2 p.m. Thursday,
November 5, when the Rev. J.
P. , Prest, of Lucan, conducted
funeral services.
Pall -.bearers were six charter
members of the Legion at Mark -
dale.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Helen Graham, two
daughters (Mavis) Mrs. J. R.
Wilcox of Ingersoll; (Donalda)
Mrs. Murray Johnson of Regi-
na; and one son, Graham of
Lucan.
Son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
William Thompson, he was born
on Scugog Island. He enlisted in
World War I in 1917 where he
lost an eye. He was a miller at
Woodham and Markdale and
was on the Security Guard at
Hamilton before moving to Wha-
len seven years ago. He lived in
Lucan the last two years.
Lucan's new gift shop
Lucan's old telephone office
has taken on such a new look
that few would recognize the
place. Mrs. J. Radcliffe has
transformed it into an artistic
gift shop with displays from In-
dia, Greece, Italy and Ireland,
She •has a splendid display of
costume jewelry and handmade
jewelry, romper -room toys, gift
wraps, modeling clay, hand-
woven ties from Quebec, books
and mechanical toys.
'Little Helpers' " Party
The . annual party for the "Lit-
tle Helpers" of Holy Trinity
Church was held in the Parish
Hall last Monday afternoon.
• The president presided for the
opening and sing song. Due to
the unavoidable absence of Mrs.
Jack tMurdy, Miss Lina Abbott
took over for the presentation
of penny -box contents and for
the games. For the former,
Miss Abbott was assisted by two
little folk, Frances Elson and
Julie Hardy, who, dressed as
angels, thanked each child as
they deposited their donations
in a decorated container, "Pen -
Cies for Jesus,"
. The mothers sat in ' a large
, circle with a kindergarten chair
in front of them, to which the
children returned for refresh-
ments, served by the members
df the WA.
Owing to weather conditions
the attendance was not as large
as expected.
Immunization clinic
Dr. E. R. Patterson of Lucan
will be in charge of another im-
nlunization clinic against diph-
theria, whooping cough, tetanus
and polio at the Lucan Public
School next Friday morning,
November 13.

The 'religious film "All That I
Have," sponsored by the Lucan-
Clandeboye AYPA was shown in
the parish hall last Sunday night
and was so greatly enjoyed by
those present that it was de-
cided to repeat it in the base-
ment of the church at the 11
o'clock service next Sunday to
give all the congregation the op-
portunity to see it.

On Sunday at St. James church

Remembrance Day theme.
The new communion four piece

service, 2.30 p.m. This film was
shown at the AYPA meeting on
Sunday eveningat Luean. Later

both churches on Sunday.

purchased the 100 -acre farm on
concession 2, McGillivray from
Mr. Wilfred Cunningham. He
also purchased the school and
land of SS No. 4 known for
years as Marr's School.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Cunning-
ham and Joe are taking up resi-
dence this week on the farm of
the late Mr, Moore Cunningham
near the village on No. 4 High-
way.
