HOCKEY IS OFF AND RUNNING
It must be a cinch for, the WOAA Business
Manager to tell that the '59-'60 hockey ean ai i
is under way without reading the papers,
Already, after only two official league games
had been played, two protests ha e been filedwith
$50 cheques backing them up, Oddly enough, both
protests are wedged against Mitchell Red Devils,
who have filed themselves as Int. "B" entrants in
the WOAA Group 1 setup this season. Lucan-llderton
and Exeter Mohawks are the clubs with the beef.
According to the rule book, intermediate "B"
teams are only allowed four waiversor imports or
any number made up of the two to total four. As
far as the business managers of the two protesting
clubs are concerned, Mitchell has well exceeded their
limit. To this corner it's all Greek but if Mitchell has
jumped the boundaries, we feel sorry for their illegal
players, Where are they going' to play after being
declared ineligible. OHA rules flatly state that a
player can only sign one certificate a year or become
suspended, We're not saying that Mitchell, Forest or
any of the teams have jumped the gun on the waiver
and import rule because we don't' know. But if they
have, the management of each club should be dealt
with severely. Bringing in ineligible players will ruin
the league faster than anything, Clubs may get away
with it for a while but sooner or later it cat::hes up.
We personally don't know if the club, Mitchell in
this case, is on the up and up or not. For their
sake and the league's, we hope they are. But skim-
ming over the lineup brings a little doubt into our
mind. However, the final decision rests with the
WOAA. Word should be heard within the week,
LADIES, DON'T PASS THIS UP!
Exeter Bowling Lanes have been very fortun-
ate in securing the services of Canada's Mrs. Bowler
Mabel McDowell -for a public appearance in the
lecal alleys on Thursday, December 3. Not many
alleys across this fair domain of ours have had her
under their roof..,
Mabel McDowell is chief instructor for the
Bowling Proprietors Association of Ontario and is
Indeed a very busy woman. This professional instruct-
ress, who has operated bowling clinics from coast to
coast in Canada, normally appears in large cities.
This is the chance that thousands of female
bowlers across the country wait for but never get.
All of the fairer sex throughout Exeter and district
will have a chance to see McDowell in action. Here's
your chance to straighten out your game! And it
doesn't cost you a cent! Thanks to the local 'alley
management, all expenses are being looked after. All
they ask of you is to show your appreciation to
Mabel McDowell by appearing for instructions.
GOALTENDING A PLEASURE FOR SAWCHUK
Terry Sawchuk, who presently performs his
duties for Detroit Red Wings in the nation's top
money circuit as far as the ice game is concerned,
Is in his tenth season as an active NHL'er. The classy
netminder has 79 shutouts in regular scheduled
league play to his credit. This fantastic number
easily tops all modern day goalies. Shutouts are an
interesting part of a game of hockey. Looking over
Terry's record, it shows that he enjoyed his greatest
seasons from 1951-52 to the 1954-55 seasons. Each
year he chalked up an even dozen shutouts. An old
timer by the name of Bili Durnan, who donned the
pads for Montreal Canadiens in the forties, also pro-
duced 34 shutouts in seven seasons with the high-
flying Frenchmen. In the 1948-49 season, Bill had his
best year hi registering 10 shutouts. This fellow by
the name of Sawchuk is one of the main reasons,
Why Detroit Red Wings are presently so high in the
NHL standings. In his first five games this season,
he posted two shutouts. With netminding like that,
how can a club go wrong?
TO ANNOUNCE TIGER BALL GAMES
Detroit fans throughout the district will be
Interested to 'know that George Kell and Ernie Har-
well will be co -announcing the Tiger baseball broad-
casts on radio and television.
The name of Harwell will ring a bell with
National League fans as he used to do the Dodgers'
games from Brooklyn: The 41 -year-old sportscaster
gave Kell his first chance at the mike in 1956 when
he was injured: George would do a few innings of
the Baltimore games.
George Kell needs little introduction to en-
thusiastic baseball followers, He was extremely popu-
lar as a Tiger player and is now 37 years old. Kell
became a telecaster in 1958. He broke intc baseball
in 1940 in the Northeast Arkansas' League. Phila-
delphia Athletics in '43 gave Kell his chance in the
to
majors. In '46, George was traded 'Detroit for
Barney McCosky and he played there for seven years
and posted a -healthy .300 batting average. Kell has
seen service with Boston, Chicago and Baltimore as
well as Philadelphia and Detroit. He retired from
playing in '57.
This corner feels that Kell is one of the best
announcers around the circuit even though he is
more or less a rookie to the others. His play-by-play
descriptions are clear and accurate and he gives
credit where credit is due, no matter which club it
belongs to.
CUFF CLEANERS --,•Dave Weber, bouncing Mohawk
blueliner, tells us that there was a slight misprint
in last week's edition saying "that he was single but
almost hitched!" Now whoever would write a thing
like that must be out of his or her mind. The line
should have lead, "Dave is still a happily married
bachelor!" . , Place your bets. It's W.nnipeg for
the Grey Cup, We think Kenny Ploen will prove
