What about that infernal Chir-
roping?'Fore the sake of interest,
the song of the cricket is pro-
duced by the male rubbing to-
gether the outer pair of wings.
Night-time is singing -time for
hint and. his many friends.
Light sleepers and those con-
cerned with the welfare of their
broadloom might be interested
in control measures advised by
the Ontario Department of Agri-
culture. Apply chlordane as a
2% spray or as a 5% dust.
Direct the' material into spots
near any warm location where
the crickets may be, hiding.
•For outside control, try a1/4%,
chlordane spray. Put it on in-
fested vegetation and garbage.
Chirps keep
you awake?
Crickets are exasperating.
They sneak into your house. They
keep you awake nights. They
damage woollens, silk, cotton,
and other fabrics, And who can
find them?
The house .cricket is pale
brown and about three-quarters
of an inch long. Few home-
makers know this, because the
pest has the knack .of being
"heard but not seen" As soon
as the weather cools down,the
cricket leaves the garden and
sets up. shop in your house,
where it. may remain active for
a whole winter, It lays its eggs

Canadians fifth
in tea drinking
By emptying nearly a billion
cups a month, Canadians have
preserved the status of tea as
Canada's national drink and
boosted themselves into . fifth
place among the tea drinkers of
the world.
Reporting these facts to the
annual meeting of the Tea Coun-
cil of Canada, R. Keith Porter,
chairman,, also said that Mari-
timers are Canada's tea -drink-
ing champions, They drank 940
cups per capita during a recent
12 -month period, against a 'na-
tional average of about 1157.'
In pounds of tea consumed per
capita, only the United Kingdom,
New Zealand, Australia and Iraq
surpassed Canada during the
-year ended June 30, 1959, Mr.
Porter said.
"Canadians," he declared,
"actually drank five times as
much tea per capita as did their
closest neighbours, the people
of the United tSates, a fact that
points up the many subtle dif-
ferences that still exist between
living habits in the two coun-
tries.
"The three out of four Cana-
dians who drank tea emptied
more than 11.5 billion cups. This
is almost twice as many as
shown by coffee and three
times as many as• soft drinks."
