MITCHELL STiLL HAS ONE SERIES TO GO
Mitchell Lincoins, who bowed out of the On-
tario Baseball Association playdowns in Galt last
1'1Tednesday night still have one series to complete
before they can call it a season. Before they were
taken .away from the Huron -Perth playoff set, Zurich
and Mitchell were battling it out for the local loop
crown. The Lumber Kings presently lead the best -
of -seven series three games to one On two occasions,
rain washed out efforts to play a fifth contest. Per-
haps the two managers of each club will have lined
up something definite for the fans by the time this
weekend rolls around.
Getting back to Mitchell Lincolns and their
best -of -five OBA series playoff with Caledonia. River-
sides, we feel strongly that the Lincs should have
won the series. Developments before and throughout.
the fifth and final game sent the whole series right
down the drain. "Link" Rohfritsch, who belted the
ball with authority throughout the entire series, was
put on the spot in Galt Wednesday night when his
number one receiver Kenny Saxton failed to show.
Apparently Saxton had to work in Wingham, and
couldn't get the time off. Charlie Westman moved
into the catching spot and did a very commendable
job but Charlie doesn't have the arm Saxton has for
nailing runners trying to steal second. Another point
which hurt the Lincolns considerably was the fact
that Roger and Wayne Pauli didn't arrive until the
game was in the fifth inning. With the lateness of
Wayne Pauli, Bob Sadler, normally used for pinch-
hitting duties, was pressed into action on the open-
ing pitch. Had. Pauli started, Sadler could have ap-
peared at the plate in the ninth in h.is favourite role
with two men on and none out and might have pos-
sibly supplied the extra punch needed for a Lincoln
victory. However, the way it was, Bob, Cy or "Sandy"
Sadler had to watch his teammates knock their heads
against a stone wall in the desperation ninth. Pinch -
hitters in baseball play almost as an important part
as a regular. For instance, Caledonia lifted George
Weatherston in the fifth for pinch -hitter Craig Ash-
baugh and Ashbough promptly slammed a 1-2 pitch
into deep left for a run -scoring double.
The third item we thought doomed. Mitchell's
bopes of winning the game was in the bottom of the
ninth when the Lincolns got their first two men on
the base paths with no one out. "Link" Rohfritsch
came to the plate, and although he had had three
hits in four trips—including a homer—we thought
the big fellow should have layed down one of base-
ball's greatest plays—the bunt. Frank Vyse, Caledonia
third baseman was playing miles behind the sack at
third and would have been caught flat-footed if the
ball had been dumped into his direction. As it was,
"Link" went for an outside pitch and popped it up.
It turned out the next batter, Gary Hopf, grounded
to short to force Wayne Pauli at second and -"Porky"
Wallace fanned to retire the side. Of course it's easy
• to say what they shouldhave done at this stage of
the game sitting here as an armchair quarterback
Calling the plays. Sincerely though, we think "Link"
and his crew should be given a solid pat on the
back for the old college try they put up to subdue
the Riversides. Maybe they'll have better luck against
Zurich and pull the Huron -Perth title out of the fire.
Better hurry though gang, old man winter isn't far
away.
CUFF CLEANERS—Ron Richards and his wife Rose-
mary have been hired by the Exeter Figure Skating
Club for the coming season. The pair comes into
town with very high recommendations and have
worked throughout the centres of Milverton, Palmer-
ston, Mitchell and Blenheim. Exeter Figure Skating
Club feels that they will be able to accommodate to
better advantage more skaters with two pros on the
ice. Incidentally, Ron Richards is a brother to Ray
Richards who • once wore an Exeter Mohawk hockey"
sweater for this town . • Looks as though New
York Yankees have turned out to be the "spoilers"
in the American loop this year. Taking two from
the Cleveland Indians over the weekend loosened
the cork on the champaign bottles for Chicago's "Go
Go" White Sox! .. We'll miss Gerry Smith's com-
rnents on the baseball wars next week as he is
going into one of London's hospitals for a minor
operation. He won't tell us exactly which. one. He
says he has to look over the nurses first before he
decides! Sounds as though one of the hospitals is
going to take a beating for a few days! ... Zurich
juveniles, who have been idle for nearly three weeks,
took the first game of their series with Wilton Grove
an the chin by a 14.7 count. Perhaps now that they
have one game under their belt they can get back
into the swing of things and upset the Grove nine.
We'd certainly like to see it! , . . For some unknown
reason, every year WOAA representatives are always
kept waiting for rounds in OBA competitions. You'd
•. think a better arrangement could be worked out
between the two organizations. Zurich Lumber Kings
are another club waiting for word for their next
opponents in OBA ball . . Speaking of the Lumber
Hings, we'd like to tip the old chapeau to Don
O'Brien on the announcement of a new bouncing
baby boy! That's cutting the imports down, Don! .
Toronto Maple Leafs have been working out at Peter-
borough for a week now and already they are talk-
ing about a second, third or fourth place finish for
the blue and white. Man, oh man! That's really con-
fidence!
ornfidence! ... Watch out for. ex -Leaf Mari Cullen,
.how with the Rangers. Reports have it that he is
really flying. Maybe he'll get a chance to show what
hockey talent he really has. Leafs were always bad
for keeping bench warmers around,

Mitchell drops last
Double 1,, top cif ninth 1
ousts Michell team
Roy Richardson's run scoring:
double in the top of the ninth
with two out in Galt Wednesday
evening, ended all hopes Mit-
chell Lincolns had for advancing
farther down the OBA playoff
trail in intermediate "CC" ball
as Caledonia Riversides upset ,
the Huron-P'ertir representatives
by an E-7 count. The game was
the fifth and final of a hest -of•
five series and was played on
neutral grounds by the two
clubs.
It was a see -saw affair all the
way with first Mitchell taking
the lead on two occasions.. only
to have Caledonia come back and ,
Cie it up. The Riversides grabbed
a one run advantage in the top
of the fifth but Mitchell wiped it
out in the bottom of the eighth
on a desperation spurt.
Clubs show home run power
Three home runs took place
in the nine inning contest with,
Caledonia belting two of them.
The first roundtripper was a
solo effort by Lorne Hubner in
the tap of the second which tied
up the game a 1-1. Hubber
bounced a liner off the low and
angled Jeft field fence and
rounded the bases when the ball
got away from Bill Murphy on
a tricky bounce.
Inthe top of the fourth, the
Riversides broke loose for four
runs on five base hits in-
cluding three singles, a triple
and homer — and Mitchell er-
ror by "Link" Rohfritsch. Rich-
ardson gat his first hit of the
game for the winners by clout-
ing a lead off triple to deep .left.
George Weatherston singled Ri-
chardson home on the 1-1 pitch
and moved on to second when
catcher Gerry Legere drilled
one through the box. This set
the stage for Gord Mudie's
three -run circuit clout. Mudie
took advantage of Galt's shot
right field fence — 252 down the
line — and looped a 1-2 pitch
just over over4 the fence to put the
Riversides out in front 5-1.
Although trailing by four runs,
Mitchell didn't give up. The Lin-
colns came back with five in
bheir half of the inning to put
Caledonia back on the short end
of the score once again.
George Coveney .started the
ball rolling with a lead-off sin-
gle. Bid.i Murphy walked to put
two on. "Buster" Brown cracked
a run scoring single into left
field but Murphy was caught off
the bag at third for the first
out, After Charlie Westman took
Mike Gyokery's fast ball on his
throwing arm. Bob Sadler un-
loaded a two run double into
centre field. Playing Manager
"Link" Rohfritsch, who had
two previous singles, promptly
made his presence known by
slamming the longest home run
of the game — a 350' blast over
the right centre field fence — to
score Sadler ahead of him. Gary
Hopf finished the inning by fan-
ning.
Riversides take the lead
Caledonia scored twice in the
fifth. Mike Gyokery reached
first on an infield. error. Hubber
popped to Colquhoun at second
but Roy Richardson walked to
move Gyokery to second. George
Weatherston who was due at 'the
plate was lifted far pinch -hitter
Craig Ashbough in a despera-
tion move to go ahead. It paid
off. Ashbough corked the third
pitch for a two -run double down
the right field line. Caledonia
went one up on the scoreboard
at 7-6.
Mitchell was held off the score
in the fifth, sixth andseventh
frames but came to life in the
bottom of tate eighth to tie up
the game. Leadoff batsman
George Coveney who was
walked, stole second and moved.
on to third on a fly to centre.
He then romped home on short-
stop Edward's relay error,
Then came the dramatic ninth,
Tony Colwell lifted a pop-up into
short left field that droppedbe-
tween Coveney, Roger Pauli and
"Porky" Wallace for afiscrateh
single. Mike Gyokery took first
on a fielder's choice when Col-
well was out at second, Lorne
Rubber popped to catcher Ohar-
,lie Westcan for the second out
and it looked as though Mitchell
were going to keep Caledonia
off the score sheet. But then it
happened. Richardson connected
for his run praduci.ng double to
left.
In the bottom 'ha.lf of the
ninth. Mitchell got lead-off Char-
lie 'Westman on with a walk and
Wayne Pauli with a single but
