Joey's really
starting fa roll
By ELIZABETH TOUCHETTE
Joey Hollingsworth is really
starting to roll wider Billy
O'Connor's guiC-xice. Now the
dung London. .Ontario dancer
as added singing to his reper-
toire. kle cut his first record, a
rock and roll tune which he wrote,
limself backed by a number
written for him by O'Connor, re-
ttently,
The master tape is currently
making the rounds of recording
studios and if allgoes well a new
facet of Joey's career will he in
the making.
We watched Joey practising on,
the bongo drums one day and
ire's tremendous at that ton.
Long terns contracts. an un -
beard of procedure just a few
seasons ago at the CBC are now
in vogue. We've already men-
tioned Wayne and Shuster's flue
" I
'a e
year deal, and Jack n s three
year contract. Sylvia ,Murphy
has been signed for two years,
,Joan Fairfax has anoption for
two years and under contract
for the fall are. Juliette, Fred
Davis, Anna Cameron, Bill Wal-
ker, Wally Koster, Gorelie Tapp,
,Joyce Hahn, Allan Blye, Tommy
Common and the Hames Sisters..
According to the CBC these..
(stars are all the product of
CBC's "Canadian talent develop -1
?tient plan."
And it is a fact that CBC does'
lsiore to encourage new talent
;Phanany other known media.
Often, as in the cast of Tommy
Common, a spark of talent is re-
cognized by auditioners even
though the performer is far
from 'polished enough lo be a
professional. When this happens
the CBC often gives advice, as to
just what is lacking and if the
performer cares enough he takes
the advice and often ends up a
star, (Tommy did; he worked out
with a tape recorder for a year,'
singing, practising, noting his
errors and smoothing them out
so that when he finally got his
opportunity on Pick the Stars he.
won,hands down and has been!
under contract with the teievi-
'ion. network ever since).
So oft.enin the past. Canadian
talent. has beenconsidered by:
Canadians as mediocre, inferior
stuff, good enough only for a cap-'
tive audience.
This might still hold true with
die-hard Torontonians who watch
reruns of Lassie on Buffalo rad
ther than admit that Canadian;
programming is worthwhile. But,
to :most of us our own shows are.
often superior to imported pro-
grams. i
The fact' that our performers;
*.re being invited los appear in
the U.K, and occasionally in the
States has impressed some view-
ers enough that they now will
consider watching CBC.
Wayne and Shuster are a pair
who have' noticed the changing
attitude. And when they are
asked "'Why don't you do as
funny skits on CBC as you do on •
the Ed Sullivan show?" they ran
only smile and try to get it
across to an unbelieving vieweri
that the Sullivan sketches are
merely repeats of CRC programs
done in the past.
