"There was a burst of light -
from 'hat non't know -and a
temble crash. Then I saw sev-
eral bodies fly up in the air -
one went quite nigh, perhaps 15
feet."
Langford said he thought the
avielkjesohn car was "going midi
faster than po."
Meiklejohn himself, who has re
aided in Exeter for about tw
years, felt he was driving be
tween 50 and 55 Mk, but hadn't
looked .at his speedometer be
a use it wasn't working. The air
man said he saw the sign indi-
cating 500 feet. lo the .highway
and the Langford vehicle but he
didn't see the cadets' ear.
•
"I believed I muld. have stop-
ped at the corner," he said,
"but from the other testimony
I've heard, I'm not so sure now."
Meiklejohn, LAC 3. J. Hooper,
and Meiklejahn's fa,ther-in•law,
William Grosses, 60, all of Exe-
ter, were driving to the Bend to
drink liquor. They had been at
the wet canteen at Centralia. for
about two .hours when Groves,
a Monh•ealer, decided he wanted
acme liquor.
Meiklejohn said he had had
three, maybe four beers at the
canteen but had become sick
and vomitted there. He blamed
his stomach trouble on fish and
chips which he had had -for din-
ner that night, After bringing
up, he had. one o- two beers he -
fore setting off for Grand Bend.
Coroner Dr, J. G. Godd.ard,
Hensel', told the ,jury this state -
:tient was consistent with results
of a blood test taken by Meikle -
john about five. hours after the.
accident. It :revealed. no evi•
donee of alcohol, thus expelling
Any suggestion that Meiklejohn
might have been drunk when the
crash occurred.
Other witnesses testified he did
•not appear to be under the in-
fluence of .alcohol after the a.cci•
dent. They indicated that Groves.
however, was' boisterous and
;wearing profusely.
Crown Attorney Glen Hay, QC,
who conducted the inquest, sug-
gested that Grove's loud be-
haviour may have distracted
Meiklejohn while he was driving
but Meiklejohn denied this.
PC George Matchell testified ,
the Lindal car *as driver, 136'
Into a bean field after the im-
pact. Meiklej.ohn's car came to
rest about 65' from •where, the.
cars collided. He said there was
no trace of skid marks preced-
ing the impact.
• Garage owner -John Manore,
Grand. Bend, testified brakes on
the Meiklejohn car had to be
pumped three ' times 'before they
w orked properly, but Meikle -
John. said they: were "in good
condition" before the crash.
Testimony af four Norwegian
cadets revealed the six of them
were pushing the car, three on
