TIIE FOREIGN NEWS.
The late arrieals from Europe bring
startling intelligence. The Russian Em-
peror and his brother despots in Germany
hare been bolding a convention to "re-
gulate" the affairs of Europe. The -affairs
of France appear mainly to have engaged
their attention. The rulers by divine right I

Recently, however, a change bas lake@
plac, and the former opponents of Gode-
rich have become its ardent advocates. -
Self -interest, that most powerful a;ent
influent ing the actions of men, having led
to it, as they now see that unless they hare
a line of road from Toronto to Lake llama,
Hamilton, their great rival, will monopolise
nearly time whole of the trade a tio,t part
of tbe Province North and West of the
head of Lake Outario. For, whilst ib.
Torontonians were either dreaming alma
Railroad lines or quarrelling about thew
routes from Toroato, or their termer;
afterwards, Ilainiltoe was active and STMT..
getic, and her people united for the accom-
plshment of the important 'object they had
in view ; and thus was the Great Weatern
line of Railroad secured to Hailton.
This success, and the obvious conseque-
ces of it to the people of Toronto, have
at length roused them from their lethargy,
and their fearshaving been still hither in-
creased by the rumours, which were for
home time prevaleat, that overtaree bad
beeu made to the Goderech people, with •
view to the constructionof a hoe to the
Port of Goderich, commencing either at
Woodstock or l'aris, by parties interested
in the Great 11.estern or Buffalo lines;
they have at length perceived the adva
tages which a Railroad to Goderich would
secure to them, aad that without it, they
would lose for ever every portion of the
'Western trade of the l'rovine ; and, in
consequence of this convition. the Direc-
tors of the Toronto and Guelph line have
now come out an advocacy of a continua
bon of it to Goderich; and thus hare we
now two lines urged on our attention --one
to Toronto ria Guelph, the other to Ilamii-
too and Windsor, Buffislo, and Detroit via
Paris -and the question now for serious
comideratioo is, which is the nicset eligible
line for our adoption? and with that view,
we request your attention to the following

The.shortest route connectiog Goderich
with the head of Lake Ontario, and the
feet of Lake Ere, is, we conceive, as all
will admit, the one whirl' it is our interest
to adopt.
In
respect, Ilamilton has tbe advan-
tage over Toronto of 32 miles. But tbe
I ans route has, to m., still more important
advantages over the Toronto one. At
Paris we join the Great Wmitern line,
having open to no the Brantford and Buffalo
ne also, aod thus we obtain at coce, the
hortest route to alontral, Buffalo and the
Atlantic l'orts of the United States, and
