A TRIP TO DETROI YBr THE
STEAMER RUBY.
My dear e Besiens eo.aeeted
with my oboe's affairs earned sae. lest week,
to p oe board the Steamer Ruby, and pay
a visit to Detroit. Alter a pkaart res 1
saw, for the first time ie my life, lbs city
of Detroit. 1 had pictured it a a small
place compered to what it is, and the ques-
tion s 101.11y arose is my mead, what .s the
cause of the prosperity of Detroit? But
when I saw her fleet of magnificent Steam-
ers, her giga.tie Railroad Depots, I at
Dace coateluded it must be " the peoples'
enterprise."
Codericb should awake, imitate the ex-
ample set us by our neighbours on the
other aide-beild steamer, subscribe with
all our means to make a Railroad, and
(:oderieb with her ritual advantages, her
nourishing country around and healthy cli-
mate, will ere long become a second De-
troit. We should remember " God helps
tbose who help themselves." My business
fiaiabed-1 started from Detroit at 10
o'clock, last Saturday morning lfomeward
bound. The day was delihtful, tbe com-
pany on board the RIai y most agreeable,
and *for many stoppages on the pictu-
resque banks of the River Si. Clair, to
land passengers and receive Others, we
reached Sarnia and Port Iluroo at 5
o'clock. We Telt the later place at half
pant six and arrived at the mouth of the
Godericb harbour at a .little past ten
o'clock --here we were detained half an
hour, caused by the want of a shall light at
the end of the South Pier to guide us in.
h'lacing • light the South Pier should be
one of the first improvemeots to our har-
bour. The Council slonld look to this.
1 cannot conclude without remarking that
the Steamer Ruby has proved herself the
fastest boat on the rivers; Ler average speed
being from 16 to 20 miles an Lour. But
what to the people of Godericb is of grea-
ter consequence, she has proved herself, as
she did on ber trip before 11e last, a safe
and staunch sea boat. To Capt. Ward,
2nd, her commander, Mr. Tbompsoo,.her
Clerk, Mr. Tally, her Steward, in short to
all the officers 'On board the Ranby, all
praise is due, for the manner with which
' they endeavour to make the passengers feel
at " fume." '
