FOR :EXETER The Huron -Perth Intermediate Baseball League will go with a six -team grouping this year. Exeter isthe most notable absentee from the league as St, Marys, Goderich, Listowel, Dashwood, Zurich. and Mitchell form a comfortable loop. Nodefinite reason can be given for the loss of the Exeter entry but from what we can gather. the majority of the boys are going into other fields such as golf, swimming and softball. Mind you, not all the old players have turned down the game of baseball outright, but the majority have and that's why Exeter will slip through the '59 cam- paign on its haunches, The Huron -Perth loop had a shaky run for its initial week of activity. The weatherman g a v e the six -team loop little .to rejoice about as he washed out the first two games and made the teams play through a seemingly dense fog to complete the third. Thick patches of fog rolled in off the lake at Goderich to make life miserable for the players for nine full innings even though Goderich became the DOUG O'BRIEN Eventual victors. • The Huron -Perth loop received its first major Injury last Friday night when Dashwood Tigers in- vaded Zurich Lumber Kings' stamping grounds. Secondbaseman Doug O'Brien, who knows his way around a ball field as well as a cook knows how to boil water, took one of Eppie 'vein's fast balls just above the temple on the right side of his head. When we heard of this accident, we couldn't help but wonder why Doug didn't get out of the way because he has perfect reflexes and speed to burn. 'However, the conclusion was simple and answered by Doug. "I lost sight of the pitch about half way in. It was a dark night to start with and• with the dark building in centre field, I lost track of it. I never made a move to get out of the way. The next thing I knew I was laying on the ground at home plate." The Friday night game was a four -inning af- fair in which Dashwood and Zurich were tied 3-3. Doug tells us that the swelling hasn't gone down and that he does get a few headaches from it. How- ever, he feels once the swelling goes down, he'll be free of his headaches. We sincerely hope he's right. After the crack on the side of the head we got last winter, it took some time before the swelling went down. We were rather fortunate though, as we were not bothered by headaches. Guess we shouldn't take our coaches so serious, Doug, when they say to use our heads for more than hat racks! For the life of me, I can't see why I should try and deflect a pass off the side of my nogen and you should try and lay down a drag bunt with yours. Guess we'll both have to learn the hard way. CLUBS ARE SHAPING UP FOR THE RACE Although Zurich Lumber Kings lost the ser- vices of shortshop "Red" Theander, last year's On- tario Intermediate "D" champions received a re- placement in the person of Dan Krushinski. Krush- inski was transferred to the Zurich bank from Walkerton. Bill Craig and John Wilson have joined the Lumber King forces from Clinton and Gerald Bell, George Parker and Bruce Moir are making the trip from Hensall.. With a couple more new faces that should arrive shortly, Zurich should be just as strong as last year when they won the Ontario title. Dashwood Tigers, on the other hand, could have the surprise club of the league. The Bengals are rejoicing over the fact that they have first choice of last year's Exeter players. Because the Mohawk ball club has folded, Exeter players wishing to play ball will have to go through Dashwood first. Sounds • like a New York Yankee break! To date, classy flinger Don• McKeller and lanky Jim Russell are de- finite starters for the Dashwood crew. Steve Mitro, who provided plenty of mound punch last year, and • first string catcher Bob Meharg of London also say they will be back. If these two arrive, Dashwood should have the makings of a pretty fair ball club. Exeter's Iry Ford is also working out with them: and if a strike -out king is needed, yours truly may even take a whirl at it. Looking over St. Marys and Goderich Satur- , day afternoon in Goderich, there didn't seem to be • too much class or depth in the two clubs. 'However, the season is still young and things are bound to pick up, Mitchell Legionnaires shouldn't be taking a ▪ back seat from anyone either. The youngsters they used last year have a year's experience under them and with what veterans they have, they could un- doubtedly make any team in the loop sit up and take notice. Team management throughout the circuit hope for better turnouts fromtheir fans. Players as well, will play a lot better brand of ball if someone is • there cheering the on. So how about it! Let's all get out and support your local tearrf! CUFF CLEANERS — We've been asked to announce that Exeter. Bantams will hold their initial workout of the season at the local diamond this Friday slight at 7:00 p.m. sharpt « It's good to see so many youngsters on the Iinks these days. Some of them are really hitting the hall to& , .. Take for instance Jimmy Russell. Here is a boy that hasn't swung the (clubs half as much as I have and he's chalking up scores in the low 8O's. Keep up the good work Jim! Congrats to Ross Griffith on winning Exeter Golf Club's first tournament of the year . « , Casey Stengel is talking clear, clean-cut English again. " Maybe that's why the Yankess have had so much trouble getting started .. * Get back into the "lingo" Casey, and maybe the boys will feel at home again! r « . dear that 'Don Joint of . iensall is taking quite a Fibbing from Detroit fans in hat neck of the woods. When asked how the Yankees were doing, he replied; he hadn't had time to. follow the tears, so far this year.
