Times-Advocata,: May 14, 1959 Let's talk SIORTS By DON 'BOOM BOOM" ORAVETT Sports Editor DOUG HARVEY TO VISIT EXETER THIS WEEK Doug Harvey, defensive genius of the World Champion Montreal Canadiens, will be a welcome visitor to this neck of the woods on Saturday, May 16, when he appears: at Exeter's minor hockey ban- .quet, Everyone who was connected with the winter sports programis being invited to see Harvey and. ask him questions about his profession. We under- stand that even the referees are in on this one., Through the courtesy of local service clubs,. including the Kinsmen, Lions, Legion and Recreation- al Council and the strong co-operation of Moe Gobeil out Centralia way, the appearance of Harvey has been made possible. Prior to the Saturday show, the burly defenceman will attend RCAF Centralia's An- nual Winter Sports Banquet on the station. Pete Durand of the local Legion is the instigator of the ]minor banquet here and we think he should have a pat on the back for his efforts. Autograph seekers should have a field day and with a bun feed thrown in, it .should make an enjoyable afternoon for all the local kids, coaches, referees and executive alike. By the way, the big shin -dig is taking place in the Exeter Legion Hall between the hours of 2 - 5 p.m, Undoubtedly, the turnout of youngsters will be first class, While they're there, we hope that they ask Mr. Harvey the many questions they wonder about So much through their ownseason of play. This is your chance, fellas, Don't slip up! INJURY COST HARVEY ALL-STAR BERTH Top surprise of the National Hockey League all-star team for the '58-'59 season was that Doug Harvey's name ;failed to appear on the lineup for the first time in eight seasons. After watching him display his abilities in the Stanley Cup playoffs against Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs, it's hard to understand why the defensive stal- wart didn't make the dream team. In the playoff round, he looked like a million dollars to his own club and even to opposition fans. Many things led to the fact that he wasn't chosen.. The main factor seems to be that he failed to stay healthy through the 70 -game NHL schedule. After missing a number of games throughvarious injuries, Harvey's point output took a dive from 41 to 20. He managed only four goals and. 16 assists. In '57-'58 he fired nine goals and collected 32 as- sists. However, despite the fact his regular season's play wasn't up to standards, in our book, he was the cream of the crop in the money series. It's too bad that playoff hockey isn't taken into consideration when all-star balloting is accomplished but that's the way the old ball bounces. We doubt very much is Monsieur Harvey will miss the extra $500 he would have collected if chosen on the first team. What bothers us is the fact that he was picked as the fourth best defencemanin the league. The selectors put Canadiens' Tom Johnson, Rangers' Bill Gadsby and Detroit's Marvel Pro.novost ahead of the free -wheeling Harvey. Was he really that bad? We'll bet the Royal Mint that if the top brass of each teamput their all-star defensive units on the block, the first one to be grabbed would come under the name of Doug Harvey! CUFF CLEANERS—Congratulations are in order for Theresa Thompson for her fine showing in. the Exeter Ladies' Bowling League finals against the Pin Pop- pettes. Averaging 232 a game, she practically sank the 'Poppettes single handedly. -A tip of the chapeau is. also in store for the rest of the team. Hi -Lights really whooped it up after the victory ... Pin Pop- pettes had only one beef after it was all over. If nature hadn't taken its course on so many of their bowlers this year ... they would have won it all! ... How about that! ... Public schools throughout the district are invited to take part in Lucan's An- nual Hobby and Trade Fair Bicycle relays for the fastest and slowest are reported to be on the agenda . .Better hurry and file your entry! . It's good to see the Cyclone Baseball League is going to operate again. It's a crying shame nothing is being done in Exeter this year! . . Chicago White Sox kind of took Cleveland Indians off the warpath for a few days with their sweep of their recent three - game series. The Sox have won six out of nine from the tribe this year - . . The Yanks are starting to roll now and Smitty the barber is starting to cut hair with a little more zest , . . Bowling is rapidly coming to a close after a very successful. season. Exeter Bowling Lane proprietors should be com- mended on the way they handled things over the past year Mitchell Red Devils are building their Hockey club for the '59-'60 campaign ... See in the Mitchell paper where ex -Mohawks Earl Barton and Marvin Shantz and Murray Butcher have moved into Mitchell. We hope they didn't forget "Barney's" per- sonals from Stratford. We saw him walking the streets. in the Shakespearian town last Wednesday looking for something to do. He tells us that he is going to work out with the Montreal Allouettes again this fall. Hope you make it "Barney". ft!!r!i!!I!n!!!tllltenor!]rlrrurtrrrutrn+irunite(litutnRmlih„im,vrr•r•rerrumuunrnrirnlnimrrlsiu!lrluuuui' ALF ANDRUS rt , Plumbing, -= Heeti Oil B E E, Sheet Metal Werk 441 ANDREW ST., EXETER PHONE 719 L haittlOaritnitrrttnitrtircies]`tUrtlrr8iOcitrruOthrrlrrtrlrtlrrtlltrrrfriarrniriirrliot0f0fmcVOrnrrritriOlOW llitiihtiittlntrlttlrilat acclaim] Wfloauliul oumitrglrniilhint1111rnnriii Rrdhlrlllriltilllnrillnllilrr(1'llli.
