Knight has returned to her home after spending the winter months with her daugh- ters. Mr. Steve Molnar has com- pleted his duties at Hudson Gay and is holidaying with his par- ents before being assigned to his new post. Mr. George Baynham spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. 0. Bestard in Thorndale. Mr. and Mrs, Kenneth Hodgins and family attended a presenta- tion and dance in the Crediton Community Centre on Saturday night for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hodgins (newlyweds). Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Eaton, of London, were Saturdayvisi- tors with M. and Mrs, John Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cunning - ton and Janet, of Elimville, were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs, Fred Cunnington. Mrs, Lorne Hicks and her school pupils took part in the musical program in the Evan- gelical iiB church in Crediton on Monday night. The evening's entertainment was under the supervision of Mr. Lawrence Wein and Mr. Douglas Gill. Mr, W. Manning of Clinton was 'guest speaker at the service in the United Church on Sunday morning. Mr. Manning spoke in the interests of temperance. Johns, the na- tive of Usborne who has been ap- pointed president of the Univer- sity of Alberta, will be given a doctor of laws degree, honoris cause, at the spring convocation of University of Western Onta- rio, London, it was announced recently. Dr. Johns, who received his bachelor of arts degree from Western in 1930, is the first UWO graduate lo become a uni- versity president. He was appointed president of the University of Alberta in Jan- uary succeeding Dr. Andrew Stewart, now chairman of the Federal Board of Broadcast Gov- ernors. After teaching at Victoria Col- lege, University of Toronto, Dr. Johns earned his doctor of philo- sophy degree in classics and an- cient history at Cornell Univer- sity in 1934 and joined the .staff of Waterloo College. He left Ontario in 1938 to be- come lecturer in classics at the University of Alberta, later be- coming head of the department. Following a period as assistant to the president, he became dean of arts and science and then vice- president, actively administering the university's affairs during Dr. Stewart's absence on Royal Commission duties. Dr. Johns is one of six promi- nent Canadians, including Prime Minister J. G. Diefenbaker, who will receive honorary degrees at the convocation. News of Grand Bend By MRS. E. KEOWN Legion ladies entertain The Grand Bend Ladles' Auxil- iary to Legion No. 498 enter- tained the Ladies Auxiliaries of Forest and Thedford to a social evening on Tuesday when about 25 guests were present. The evening was spent in play- ing erokinole, Chinese .checkers, euchre and penny bingo. Mrs. Lloyd Baker was winner of the high ladies' prize in euchre and Mrs. Wilfred Ravelle, the lone hands' prize. Other prizes were won by the guests. Personal items Mrs. Nettie Baker is spending a couple of weeks with her daugh- ter, Mrs, W. T. Hicks and Mr. Hicks at Kincardine, Mrs. Mae Holt spent the week- end with her daughter, Miss Beulah Holt, in Windsor, Mr. Peter De Jong of near Kerwood has purchased the prop- erty on Main Street formerly owned by Mr. Ted West, and is fixing it up for a lunch and cof- fee shop. Mr. West has pur- chased the property recently owned and just vacated by Mr. John Young on the (;ill ' Road, 'Mr. Young now taking up resi- ' dente in his new home on the Sauble Road. i Little Stephen Baird of. Lon- don, son of Mr, and Mrs, Billie Baird spent a few days .last week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Baird, who took him home on Sunday. Mrs. Lawrence Mason's moth- er, Mrs. Barbara Minielly of Wyoming died on Thursday eve- ning in Watford, Funeral serv- ices were held on Monday in Wyoming. The late Mrs. Minielly was known by several in this district. Miss Brenda Brenner, of Sar- nia, spent the weekend at her home in town, Mr. Gordon Haskett of London has purchased the Skipper prop- erty on the highway in Grand Bend, known as Twin Gables. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Stanlake visited with Mrs, Stanlake's sis- ter, Mrs. Albert Oultram in Vic- toria Hospital on Sunday, Mr. Lawrence Johnson is laid up with influenza this week. About 30 Boy Scouts and Cubs attended the service in a body in the United Church on Sunday morning. The boys :met and paraded from the Colonial Hotel. Rev. A. E. Holley had a suit- able address for the. boys, Dis- triet Commissioner Robert Tay- lor was also in attendance. Mr, and Mrs, Donald Scott and son, of Sarnia, visited with Mr. Scott's grandmother, Mrs. Wil - lion Patterson, over the week- end. Mr, and Mrs, Sven Neilsen,. who have been occupying the property of Mr. Lawrence John- son, took up residence in their new home in London on Mon- day. Several ladies from Grand Bend attended the trousseau tea on Wednesday for Miss Arlene Love, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Love of Exeter district, whose marriage took place on Saturday in her parent's home, to Mr. Peter Ravelle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Ravelle of Grand Bend. The WMS will have charge of the morning service in the United church when Mrs. Colin McKeen (Beatrice Green) will be guest speaker, New rector at GB church The Bishop of. Huron, the Right. Reverend G. N. Luxton, has an- nounced the appointment of The Reverend William John Mill- man, B.A., L.Th., presently the assistant curate to The Vener- able F. G. Lightbourn at St. James', Stratford, to be rector of. St. Paul's Church, Thedford, with St. John's -by -the -Lake, Grand Bend. Mr. Millman will be succeed- ing The Reverend A. E. Bow- ker, B.A., L.Th., who is leaving totake up his ministry in Eng- land. Mr. Millman is a son of Mr. and Mrs. lanes R, Millman, Lon- don. He graduated from the Uni- versity of Western Ontario and Huron College in 1957. He was or- dained by Bishop Luxton in the same year, and since that time, has been the assistant curate at St. James' Church, Stratford. Fraser, i1WQ, ,Lon don has been awarded a $4,000 research grant from the National Research Council for thepretieal studies i.n atomic collision. A graduate of SHDHS and son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Fraser, Anne street, Dr. Fraser is one of 47 members of the faculty of the university who received re- search grants, BIDDULPH. Personal items Mr. and Mrs. Frank Trudgeon of Dundalk spent Saturday with the Elston families renewing old acquaintances. Mrs, John McAllister who has been a patient in St.. Joseph's, London, for sone time, is some- what improved. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Skinner, Garry and Karen were guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs, Alvin Cooper, Elimville. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Allan•Elston were Mr. and Mrs, Winston Shapton and family of Exeter . Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Skinner, Exeter, are spending a few days with Mr. John McAllister and boys.
