Modern living decreases fitness
RCAF officer tells HS athletes
"Flaying sports helps, keep one
physically fit and builds mental
alertness," F/0 Les Halliwell
told SHDHS students Friday
night at the annual sports ban-
quet, honoring teams and indivi-
duals for outstanding achieve-
ments over the past year.
"Comparing figures .of today
with those recorded 20 years ago,
physical fitness for people in
this country is down 1,5 per
cent," he said. "This is mainly
due to. modern advancements,"
"Twenty years ago people used
to walk four miles to the beach
and home again while today the
Automobile is so handy that it is
used for almost everything. Peo-
ple don't go to the lake and
swim out a mile like they used
to. They hop into their boat and
cruise all day.
"When you are physically fit,
your body functions properly,"
he continued," and you can go
at a faster pace. Going at a fas-
ter pace means you are mental-
ly alert and learning." "Sports
play a very vital part in the phy-
sical fitness program and it is
up to every student here •to
; make sure that in some way, he beiner, Ross Wein, Jim Tomlin -
:keeps connected with some form .son, Fred Hunter, Jack- Miller,
+of activity that will keep him- Brian Ailey Jim Russell, Bob
self in the best of condition even Skinner, Harold Eagleson and
after he graduates from school.", Alen Busche.
