That is, the question! 'Whether it ij nobler in the minds of two' incom- petent referees to let this Mohawk suffer the slings. and arrow of outrageous fortune or, for the WOAA to take up their arms and by defending, end then!, will only be known when the Western powers meet 'to 4ee de the fate of this Exeter Mohawk. His name is Larry 'Nelson Heideman. His crime—a match lams• conduct penalty—which bars him from any further competition until his case has been heard. It all hap- pened over in Mitchell when the tribe won a 7-4 overtime decision. Late in the second period, Heidie came hustling over tile Mitchell blueline after a loose puck which stopped half -way towards the cor- ner of the rink right along the boards, C, Butcher, a stalwart Red Devil blue - liner, also started .after the disc. Before be reach- ed the puck he turned to steer the Mohawk centre- man out of the play. ln- stead of turning or side- stepping Butcher, .Heide- Haan ran right into the Mitchell defender and sent .'LARRY HEIDEMAN him flying. The Mitchell friend r foe's player happened to fall near the loose puck and wiie>7:' Iieidie, who has a knack of controlling a puck in his skates, went to drag the loose disc between this -board and Butcher, the referee stopped the play this ai.echoed the words, "You're out of the game for deliberately trying to injure!" Apparently the re- ferees, Jack McKinnon of Guelph and Merlin Dixon of Fergus, got the idea frons•where they were stand- ing that Larry was trying to kick at the Mitchell player. With the play stopped, Butcher got to his feet and a small scuffle started involving mainly a little shoving show from both sides. After Larry left the ice for the dressing room. the officials, and we must use the word loosely in this instance, gave Glen Uniac a two -minute roughing penalty, for starting the' small fracas. You may ask what is the matter with that? Well, it boils down to the fact that Uniac wasn't in the play to begin with and received a penalty which Butcher should have been nailed for. While Uniac entered the sin bin, Butcher sat on the Mitchell 'players' bench taking it all in with a grin. Wold' say this boy had a right to smile. After all, he eseaped his penalty, ' watched a referee foul up a shill:Iir hockey decision and made fools out of both officials. t On top of this episode, "Red" Loader quest- ioned the ref's decision as to why Butcher wasn't given- an interference penalty. When he couldn't give any Explanation, he got a little hot under the collar and planted a ,10 -minute 'misconduct on Loader. We can't say for sure if "Red" used a little Chinese lingo in his speech with the ref or not but everyone was mad enough to pull the team off the ice. Even the Mitchell players and fans backed up the fact that such a serious decision as a "match penalty" shouldn't have entered the picture. At the moment, all of this is water under the bridge. Now the painful task for the big centreinan is to wait for the WOAA executive_ to hold a meet- s ng_Looking up Larry's penalty record, which should speak for itself as to the type of player lie is, we find that he sat out four minutes in the sin bin all last year. In '55-'56 season, when he played some- thing Like 28 games in the WOAA Major Group with Milverton. Goderich, Strathroy, Forest and Exeter, he received just one two -minute minor penalty. Surely the WOAA won't have much to decide upon for the outcome of this case. If we were in their shoes, we'd check into the characters of a few of the WOAA referees who carry a whistle in. their hand without knowing the fundamental rules of Canada's national game. Sit tight, Larry, the coffee is starting to boil: • LUCAN CHOSEN FOR FACE-OFF CEREMONY Lucan arena has, been selected as one of the four points 'in Ontario by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association Minor Hockey 'Week Committee to hold a face-off ceremony for Minor Hockey Week in Canada.
