Hamilton during the holidays.) .An anonymous • philanthropist was so impressed by a project undertaken by the, thirty-eighth Ontario Older Boys'. Parliament to aid the 'refugees of the world that he donated $100,00 to start the fund. This project, under the *direc- tion of Bill Pollen, Exeter, the ministel of world service, is one item on the full program of the Boys' Parliament, which con- cluded its 'sessions December 31, at, McMaster University, in Ham- lton. f Organized on a constituency -basis, the Parliamenthas a to- kal.of 116 ridings across Ontario. Boys of many Protestant faiths, sited Church, Anglican, Pres- yteria.n, Baptist and E.U.B. from the ages of 16 to 20, are either elected or appointed to represent each constituency. These boys must be active in hurch. and boyswork, and must pe endorsed by their nijnster and One other person. - I As the boys who atterd quick- )si find out, parliament has a purpose. An excerpts from the parliament act states that its that through us (the members purpose is "to train older boys of parliament-, as their repre- to give effective leadership in sentatives, the Christ - centred their local church and Camille- boys' groups of Ontaro pledge nity, through a practical and their support to this $22,000 vivid experience, to give them share -selling campaign by work - a real understanding of the mg under the guidance of group meaning of• democrrey, and to leaders, local boards, and the challenge them to C h r s ti an Ontario Boys' Work Board." Under the guidance in a in Canada live a comparatively church boys' group such rs Tyro comfortable life compared with or Sigma -C, As the term parliament im- plies, this is a legislative body, It is not, however, as some peo- ple suppose, a mock parliament. The legislation deals with real issues confronting boys, both in their participation in church work, and their personal living. For example, the finance act passed by parliament is a very vital one, because it is almost the sole source of income for the Ontario Boys' Work Board, par- liament's sponsoring body. It can almost be said that the fu- ture of boys' work in the pro- vince depends on this act, which states: "It is hereby enacted the millions of refugees through- out the world, be it therefore resolved that each member of this house contribute one dollar or more per month to the par- liament world service project, to be sent to the minister of world service who will turn it over to the World Council of Churches for its refugee pro- ject." This was the bill that pro- duced the anonymous donation of $100. Other pieces of legislation pass- ed included a recommendation that capital punishment be a- bolished, that free university education be instituted for all those qualified, and that the use Ronnie, Miss Linda Glover and Mr. George Eisensehink of Exeter; Airs. In keeping with the final pnr- pose of parliament, the program was designed to challenge older boys to Christian Jiving. The theme of parliament was "To Bear Witness to the Truth," In the Bible studies and vespers, in the church services, this theme was constantly before the members. At the beginning, each member signed an oath, that he would be faithful, and hear true allegiance to t h e "King of Kings." Thr Dug h this, and through contact with 100 other boys, he came to realize that the future of the world lies in a Christian society, on a govern- ment whose members place above all else, their Christian obligations. This is why Boys' Parliament has such potential in a demo- cratic society. 10 Exeter Farm Equipment exclusive dealer for 4wi Champion Fuel Oil Champion Stove Oil IN EXETER and DISTRICT We are proud to lie associated with Dick Jermyn, proprietor of Exeter Farm Equipment, with his grand opening of his newly established pre,. mises.
