CAN ONE MAN MAKE A DifFERENcE?
Would Toronto Maple Leafs miss a centre like
Harris for twenty games? Or would Moith'eal
Canadiens have trouble without the "Pocket Rocket"
for thirty games? Player importance to clubs around
this district Intermediate "13" loop has often been
discussed by the fans supporting the IV teams.
You've heard it possibly as often as I have. 'Oh, if
John Doe had been there we would have won eas
IV!" Or; "the club didn't look so hot without Pearl
Bailey in the lineup." Another of the favourite say,
Ings comes something like this, "Yes, we won, but
if our classy centre had been there, we stould have
beaten them by six more
goals!"
In our estimaion, one
man means a great deal
'to a hockey club, par-
ticularly if he is a cen-
tre or one of your stal-
wart defencemen, 1Vhen
either one of these type
of players are missing,
you are in trouble. It
puts that much more re-
sponsibility on the bal-
ance of the team, As a
possible example to our
theory, we'd like to point
out the position of
Har-
ry Charles Wraith, star.
HARRY WRAITH ry centreman of the
Lucan Irish Six.
Wraith, who tips the scales around the 155 -
pound mark, stands 5' 10" and is 24 years of age, is
like the difference between night .and day to the
Lucan hockey club. The Stratford born product play-
ed only the first two games of seven played by Lucan
in the first half of the schedule and although the
Irish dropped all seven, they lost by the narrowest
of margins in the first two. Harry, one of the best
centremen to lace on a pair of skates in this loop,
has been bothered with rheumatic fever which lie
suffered when he piayecl part of a season with
Goderich Sailors in the old Int, "A" league with
clubs from Exeter, Forest, Goderich and Strathroy
forming the grouping. Wraith missed five games with
the Irish after his initial attack this season and since
he left the club never looked the same. On December
30 he returned to action and played a major role
in directing the Irish Six to their first victory of
the. season when they downed Clinton Colts 9-5.
Harry fired. two goals, picked up a pair of assists
and spearheaded a drive for his wingmen, Steve
Storey and Don Fletcher, to score three goals each.
If he continues to play with the Lucan Six 1VithOUt
much interference from his rheumatic problem, the
Irish could still make it hot for the rest of the league,
So you can realize just how valuable a player
can be. If the Leafs lose Harris for twenty games
they may as well drop back into the American Hockey
League. if the Canadians lost the services .of the
younger Rocket,. they certainly wouldn't have to
move out of the league, but they would undoubtedly
feel the gap he left in centering the big line.
Harry Wraith has been in the shinny game
for some time. He played all his minor hockey in
Stratford before travelling to St. Mary:. in '50-'51 to
play Int. "A". Rheumatic fever gave him part of a
season with Goderich in the "A" loop and in '53-'54
he was back with St. Marys Intermediates. With the
baptizing of Junior "B" hockey in St. Marys, Wraith
along with Don Fletcher, was forced to play for Wme-
one else. Lucan was their next target and they've
been there ever since.
Family wise, Harry is a married man and has
two sons. Dennis is the oldest at 31/2 years while
• Martin follows at 11/2. Harry and his wife, Barb,
Who incidentally is Don Fletc.her's sister, 'have been
married for five years. He has a rink in his hack
yard and the whole family gets into the. act of
donning skates and hockey sticks. There's more than
just the name of the game—hockey—in the Wraith
family and this could be the answer as to why he's
so good at our national pastime.
CUFF CLEANERS—Exeter Mohawks will be missing
Allie Rundle for three weeks as he's off on a three-
week vacation to Mexico . . . Last week's paper told
the story of Bob Baynham picking up his first two
'`girls" of the season instead of "goals" against
Clinton. We hear the young centreman has been
taking quite a riding about it. Well, he did it again
Tuesday night. He picked up a goal (or was it a girl?)
in the second period in Mitchell . . . Every time a
