The Citizen, 1986-01-29, Page 20PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29,1986. Negotiate freer trade or lose. Wise warns Continued from page 1 countervailing tariff on Canadian hogs. Wise asked him what he would have done under the circum stances. The producer replied Canada could have retaliated, closed the border to U.S. imports. “And shrink the pork market by one third?” Wise asked. “Canada had no control over internal U.S. decisions, Mr. Wise said but that was the difference with free trade negotiations: two parties could sit down and negotiate and the deal wasn’t a deal until both were happy enough to sign.” The spectre of U.S. shutting out Canadian farm- produce was held up by the minister as the reason Canada must negotiate freer trade with the U.S. Some commodity groups have said they don’t want free trade negotiations, he said, but they haven’t been in the U.S. and sensed the growing protec tionism there is down there, he said. ‘‘If we don’t secure access to U.S. markets we could lose one third of the pork market and two-thirds of the beef market, ’ ’ he said. ‘‘If we don’t secure access to U.S. markets we could lose one third of the pork market and two-thirds of the beef market,” he said. Brenda McIntosh of Seaforth, asked if, since the herbicide Lasso had been banned for use by growers in Canada, soybeans and other crops on which Lasso and similar herbicides had been used in other countries would be allowed to be imported into Canada. Mr. Wise said the current review committee was investigating the situation surrounding Lasso but said ‘‘our industry is being watch ed very closely. We have to stay tight to the wall about environmen tal concerns. The risk (regarding some pesticides rumoured to be dangerous) aren’t worth taking.” At this point, he said, there is still some question as to whether Lasso will be allowed for use in the U.S. this ye ar although he believes it probably will be. Regarding Prime Minister Mul roney’s election campaign promise to double the percentage of Gross National Product used for re search, he asked if this committee would apply to agricultural re search- He said he couldn't promise because of the govern- ment’seffortstoreducethe deficit. He had fought to keep deficit reduction measures from hurting research he said and tried to find ways to encourage private sector research but warned that the government couldn’t continue to spend forever. “If we don’t continue to make significant pro gress to reduce the budgetary deficit in less than 15 years we would be spending three dollars out of every four to service debt. If we don’t reduce the deficit we won’t be able to afford any research at all.” BUSINESS DIRECTORY Use Citizen ClassifiedAds Only $2.50 Phone523-4792 LOBBS OF CLINTON Salute The Citizen SALES & SERVICE FOR ★ Kubota Tractor ★ Universal Tractor ★ New Holland Farm Equipment Serving the farming community for over 30 years Joe Lobb powfs^ih daoh Fred Lobb 482-3372 34OT 482-3321 After Hours After Hours William E.
