Brussels Cadets seek recruits
to boost membership
Hullett Council warns
local wrecking yard
Heading towards its sixth annu
al inspection parade in May the
Brussels army cadet corps has
reached a low ebb in membership
and is looking for new members.
The group, which meets on
Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. at the
Brussels Legion, currently has 13
members on the roll call but only
seven actively taking part, down
from 23 on the roll at its peak.
Cadets had been coming from as
far away as Vanastra but when an
air cadet corps started up in
Vanastra, Brussels lost eight
members, says commanding offi
cer Captain Stuart Parker.
The Brussels group has been
active, despite its smaller numb
ers. The members attended two
camps in November and took range
practice at Canadian Forces Base,
Ipperwash. They may take part in a
winter living weeked in February
in co-operation with the Wingham
Air Cadet Squadron. In May,
besides their annual inspection
parade they will be undergoing
further range practice at Cedar
Springs.
The cadet program, successor to
the cadet programs that once took
place in high schools, has some
22,000 young people across Cana
da involved between the ages of 13
and 19. In 1985 there were 46
regional and national cadet camps
across Canada involving both
Canadian and international ex
change cadets. Senior cadets
attending their second or subse
quent camps are paid a $40 a week
training bonus.
The aim of the army cadets is
“...to develop in youth the attri
butes of good citizenship and
leadership.” Despite the military
setting, the cadet movement is
emphatic that it is not a training
ground for the military.
There is a note of urgency in the
need for more recruits for the
Brussels corps because to continue
it should have 18 or 20 active
members. Anyone interested can
contact Stuart Parker at 887-6572
(Brussels village office) or show up
Tuesdays at 7 at the Brussels
Legion.
