From the Minister's Study Sharing what we most value, true test B Y BONNIE LAMBLE MINISTER OF DUFF’S UNITED WALTON AND BLUEVALE UNITED CHURCHES Severalyears ago the city church to which I belonged sponsored a Vietnamese ‘ ‘boat’' family to come to Canada. An appeal went out for furniture and clothing for this family of a mother, father and year-old baby. Wanting to help I gathered some things together. When I explained whatlwasdoingtomydaughter who was not quite three years old, she volunteered to give one of her favourite toys, a colourful calico giraffe, to this child who had nothing. I was moved by her generosity but concerned that she did not understand what she was doing. Several times I explained to her that she would not just be loaning the toy but it would belong to another child for keeps. She could not ask for it back if she changed her mind. For the next day or so the giraffe never left her side. The time came to take our donations to the church. During the car ride the little girl clutched the giraffe tightly in her arms. I wondered if she would be able to give it up. But when we arrived she gave it one last hug and then quickly thrust it into the arms of the person in charge of the appeal. A little calico giraffe changed hands. That’s hardly headline news. But this little event had its own impact. Not particularly on the giver or the receiver, but on the observer. For me this became a parable and a powerful one at that. This child of less than three years hadsharednotanunwantedtoy that she would never miss but one that she loved and valued. Sharing our gifts, talents and time is something we are called to do as Christians. Though many of us may think we have little or nothing to offer we all have many gifts. The question is how will we share them? Will we give our leftovers and discards or will we give our best? In his famous letter to the church at Corinth, Paul reminds the community that their gifts are God-given and to be shared for the common good. (1 Cor. 12: 4-7) A vibrant community of faith with its worship life and its mission in the world has unlimited opportunities to utilize all the many and varied gifts that the people have to offer, from fixing a leaky faucet or sewing a few stitches to holding a baby or being with a person in need. Farewell service for Rev. Lyons A short service was held at St. John’s Anglican church, Brussels on the second Sunday after the Ephinany with Rev.
