BYLOISMcARTER The downhill slide continued as the Brussels Juniors lost both their hockey games on the weekend. They were in Clinton against the Mustangs on Friday evening. Clinton took the lead in the first period and never looked back. They led 2 -1 at the end of the first period with the Bulls. Tim Fritz assisted by Tom Newbigging getting the only Brussels goal. Clinton added four more goals in the second and managed to keep Brussels off the scoreboard. the Bulls added two goals in the third but so did the Mustangs to give Clinton the 8 - 3 victory. Tim Fritz assisted by Troy Smith and Kevin Ruttan got the first goal with Troy Smith unassisted getting the second goal. The Juniors were at home to the Thedford Browns on Sunday after noon at 2 p.m. Rob Cardiff unassisted opened the scoring early for the Bulls. Murray Dewar unassisted added one more goal for Brussels to take a 2 - 0 lead. The Brown’s came back in the last two minutes of the period to add two quick goals and tie the game. Thedford scored the only goal of the second period taking a 3 - 2 lead. Murray Dewar assisted by Kirk Whitfield tied the game for Brussels in the third but Thedford also got one more to slip ahead once more and win the game. Brussels had the opportunities to score as they out-shot the Browns44-21but the goalie was unbeatable. Hopefully the team has reached the bottom of the slide and can start the upward climb again. They certainly will have the chance in the coming week. Wednesday night will have them travelling for an 8:45 p.m. start. Saturday evening will have them travelling to Lucan for an 8:15 p.m. game. Sunday afternoon will find them at home to Mitchell. Howick will return to Brussels on Wednesday, Jan. 29. MINOR HOCKEY Wednesday evening had the Blyth Bantams in town for a 7 o’clock game which proved to be a good game of hockey. Brussels scored the only goal of the first period. Mike Fraser with help from Rodney Nicholson and Jeff Earl got credit for that goal. Brussels was lucky enough to add one more goal in the second period to take a 2 - 0 lead. Brian Alcock was the marksman for Brussels assisted by Ian Johnston and Ken Jamieson. Blyth got their first goal of the game in the third period. Dean Whitfield assisted by Larry Hunk ing and Tim Walden were credited with the goal. Blyth pulled the goalie in an effort to tie the game but Rodney Nicholson unassisted hit the empty net with nine seconds remaining in the game to give Brussels the 3 -1 victory. We were happy to hear it was one of the better games this year, as it was played very fast and very clean. Minor hockey needstosee more games played that way. Congratu lations to all the player’s fine efforts in making it a good game. Friday night had the Novice team at home to Mitchell. They had a good night scoring an 8-1 victory. Tim Machan led the squad scoring four goals and two assists. Single goals went to Brett Clark son, Ryan Finch, Brad Mulvey and Randy Beuerman. Assists went to Wayne and Alexander with two, Brett Clarkson, two, and Ryan Finch, one. The Atoms were at home also on Friday night to the visitors from Huron Park, whom they defeated 3 - 0. They travelled to Exeter on Saturday where they picked up another victory winning by a 4 - 2 score. The Peewee “A” played at home on Tuesday evening for a re-scheduled game against Elma- Logan. The visitors scored the first two goals before Danny Beuerman assisted by Shawn Jacklin and Scott Johnston got Brussels first goal to end the first period. Elma-Logan added two more goals in the second keeping Brussels off the scoreboard. Brussels came back in the third to score three unanswered goals but one was disallowed. Darren Johnston assisted by Steve Fritz and Scott Johnston got credit for one goal while Jamie Nicholson and Fritz scored the other goal. Elma-Logan added one more goal to win the game 5 - 3. All fans were very sorry to learn that Andrew McCutcheon, who had been checked and injured during the game, had to remain in hospital overnight with a dislocat ed socket in his shoulder as well as a broken upper arm. We all wish him a speedy recovery. The Peewee A’s also participat ed in the annual Legion Tourna ment which was held in Ripley. They played Hensail in an 11:30 a.m. game. Radfords, Blyth Inn, Mannings win On Sunday, January 19, Hub bards beat Radfords 12 - 3 in Blyth Industrial Hockey League play. Scoring for Hubbards were Brad Bromley with four, Brian Bromley with two, Kent Howatt with two, Gerry Hakkers with two and Dennis Knox and Brian Westburg with one each. Scoring for Rad fords were Rick Scrimgeour with two and Darryl Chalmers with one. The second game saw Blyth Inn beat Baintons 10-3. Scoring for Blyth Inn were Paul Cook with three, Steve Howson with two, Ron Hunking with two, Dale Whitfield with two and Derwin Carter with one. Scoring for Baintons were Scott Stevenson with two and Jim Oster with one. The third game Mannings beat Watsons 9 - 5. Scoring for Mannings were Ken Ritchie with three, Don Shields with two, Bill McDougall with two, Jeff Sippel with one and Tom Black with one. Scoring for Watsons were Dave Errington, Stewart Alton, Pat Cronin, Steve Bromley and Mc Dowell all with one. Brian McArter assisted by Dan ny Beuerman opened the scoring giving Brussels a 1-0 lead in the firstperiod. Hensail scored two unanswered goals in the second to gain a 2 -1 lead. Brussels’ Greg Wheeler and Scott Johnston com bined to tie score and finish the game at 2 goals a piece. In order to break the tie, they picked five shooters from each team for a shoot-out. One each of the first four shooters scored to keep the game tied at three. With the last two shooters Hensail scored and Brussels didn’t, losing the game 4 - 3 which isn’t a very nice way to lose an exciting game of hockey. It was felt by those watching the game that the time wasted in choosing five players from each team to shoot, would have been better spent in a five-minute overtime period and counted shots on goal for the victory. There would have been lesspressureonthe goalies and shooters as well. Hensall went on to play the winner of the Blyth-Ripley game for the zone championship. Thank- you to the Brussels Legion for their sponsorship in the tournament. The Peewee “ B ” team travelled to Garden City for a fun weekend. They stopped on the way to see the Detroit Red Wing game on Satur day afternoon which didn’t prove to be too exciting. Saturday evening they played the Garden City team but came out on the short side of a 6 - 3 score. Steve McCutcheon and Roger Evans scored the first goal. Roger Evans and Brian Alexander got the second goal with Brian Alexander getting the third goal unassisted. The players were billetted for the night and returned to the arena for an early Sunday morning game. Brussels faired better this game and came out on top by a 5 - 4 score. Steve McCutcheon had a good game and was involved in all five goals. Brent Evans scored the first goalassistedby McCutcheon, then Steve got credit for the second goal unassisted. Jason Cooper scored the third goal assisted by McCut cheon. Steve then scored the next two goals with an assist from Kevin Alcock on one goal and Ron Stevenson on the second.
