Peter Craig leads Biyth novice blow out BY RUSTY BLADES Last Wednesday, January 15 had the Ripley novice team come to Biyth for an exhibition game. In Blyth’s greatest show of offensive power, the home team came out bn top 10 - 0. After a tough practice of passing and positional play, the Biyth skaters put what they had learned into action. Ripley was a much slower and weaker team and this allowed Biyth to freewheel all nightand pretty well do what they wanted. Although the Ripley shots on goal were few and far between, goalie Josh Yanchus stopped everything that came his way and deserved the game puck for his first shutout of the year. Biyth put on a fine passing display in the first period and pressured Ripley but failed to score. Their goal scoring skills came to the fore in the second period as the floodgates opened. The second period ended 4 - 0 for Kevin Wheeler, new partner third in divisional championship Biyth to all but decide the outcome of the game. Six more pucks hit the twine in the third period, as Biyth showed their superiority, to make the final score 10 - 0. Brian McNichol scored the game’s first goals as he snapped out of his mid-season doldrums with a picture perfect goal. He showed some great skating and puck handling abilities as Chris topher Howson earned the assist. Henry Bos snapped out of his goal scoringslumpwith two goals on goalmouth scrambles. Centreman Mike Bromley picked up assists on both of Henry’s goals. Mike Bromley notched another hattrick as he scored two of them on rink length dashes while showing some great moves and dekes. Henry Bos picked up an assist on Mike’s other goal. The rest of the scoring belonged to defenceman Peter Craig. Peter scored four goals as he really put on a puckhandling clinic for his teammates and fans alike. Jona than Collins, earned the assist on one of Peter’s goals but the other three were spectacular unassisted efforts. Threeendtoendrushes resulted in goals as the Ripley players watched and admired the plays almost as much as the fans. Although thisisateam game, this was the most spectacular individual performance that this reporter has witnessed this sea son. This game was truly a mismatch although Ripley showed their spirit by inviting Biyth back up to Ripley for a rematch. Thanks to George Collins for expediting the refreshments into the dressing room after the game. After two years off, Kevin Wheeler of Brussels is back skating and with his new partner Michelle Menzies of Halifax plac ed third in the Central Divisional skating championships at Sudbury recently and will go on to the Canadian Championship in North Biyth Atoms come back for dramatic tie A dramatic comeback gave Biyth Atom houseleague team a 4-4 tie against Goderich at Biyth on January 13. Michael McNichol scored with just 39 seconds left and the Biyth goaltender out for an extra artacker to gain the tie. The game started as if Biyth would not have to worry about coming from behind. Danny Van Bakel scored midway through the first period with an assist from Conrad Bos to give Biyth the lead. Before the period ended Kevin Souch added to the lead with an unassisted goal with 2:07 left. Butthesecondperiod and the first half of the third belonged to Goderich as they scored four straight times, including a power playmarker, to take what appeared to be a healthy lead. But Biyth took advantage of a power play with 2:05 left in the game and Ian Andrews scored the goal to cut the lead and set the stage for Michael McNichol’s last minute heroics. Chosen the stars of the game for Biyth were Tyler Craig on defence, Rob Finch on offence and Brian Gross for his effort. Biyth Lions hold snowmobile poker rally Bay in February.
