BELGRAVE NEWS Mrs. Helen Stonehouse 887-9487 Belgrave WMS meets Symbols of church explained at service Sunday, January 19was cele brated as Children’s Sunday in Knox United Church, Belgrave. The junior choir accompanied by the organist, Mrs. George Procter sang “Praise to the Lord.” The choir members then occupi ed the central front pews to hear the message which was delivered by the Rev. John G. Roberts. He used a scripture passage from John, 17. Toemphasize his theme, “What the United Church Stands For”, Mr. Roberts referred to a banner with the symbols and names of the various uniting churches signified on it. The dove represents the Holy Spirit descending from heaven and is meant to suggest the Spirit- inspired preaching which gave the Methodist Church its power. The open Bible represents the Congre gational principle of religious freedom, liberty to preach the Word of God in loyalty to the truth and in obedience to the Holy Spirit. The burning bush is the traditional emblem of the Presbyterian church. It represents the undying church from which the Word of God is continually preached. The Cross and the two clasped hands signify the “Fellowship” of the Evangeli cal United Brethren Church. The official seal or crest on the Pulpit Fall was used to further reveal the understanding of the United Church symbols. The Al pha and Omega at the base of the seal refer to Christ who is the Beginning and End for Christians - life begins andends, for the church with Jesus Christ. The X which divides the seal into four parts is the first letter of the word “Christ’ ’ in the Greek alphabet. The shape of the crest is that of a ‘fish’, the symbol used by the early Chris tians to convey messages to fellow members. The service was concluded by the choir singing the Benediction.
