Brussels Juniors lose close game to Mitchell BY LOIS McARTER The Brussels Bulls Junior "D" hockey club played only one game this past weekend. They were in Mitchell on Friday night against the Hawks. It was a very close hockey game. The first period of hockey was a scoreless tie. The second period ended at 1-1 tie after a rugged 20 minutes of play. Tim Fritz assisted by Tom Newbigging and Murray Dewar put the only Brussels goal on the board. Continued on page 19 of the game, although Blyth did manage a powerplay goal to take a 3 - 1 lead. Mike Bromley completed his hat trick with wingers Jerrod Button and Henry Bos collecting assists with some fine passing in the Clinton zone. A couple of fans could be seen taking their hats off their heads but, once again, none hit the ice. Mike is still waiting and At a Canadian Nation champion- ship held Jan. 4 and 5 in the International Centre, Toronto. Paul Engel formerly of Cranbrook and Paul Gross of Blyth both placed CARD OF THANKS COUSINS. Murray Dewar assisted by Rob Cardiff and Dave Schmidt got credit for the third period goal. The Bulls will be in Clinton Friday night for an 8:30 game and at home on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against 1 hedford. MINOR HOCKEY The Bantams had a busy week I am sure before the season is over he will have a fine hat collection. Although outplayed for most of the game, Blyth held a 3 - 1 lead until late in the game when Clinton scored two goals in 37 seconds and the game ended in a 3 - 3 tie.. Sylvester Stallone, having re- cently conquered the box office as a ex-Vietnam soldier and a boxer, this time turns to armwrestling for his latest movie. He'll play the part of a truck driver whose girl needs an operation desperately and he turns to armwrestling to win prize money to pay for the operation. Sylvester, of course, would hardly need the money in real life. Rumour says he'll earn $25 million for doing the picture. The winners of the armwrestling contest won't do badly either. Winners of the Canadian competition will go against winners from six other competitions around the world, from the U.S. to Tokyo and England with the winner getting $100,000 plus the chance at fame and fortune in the movie. For, Paul Engel, his rise has been quick. He's been practising the sport for two years but for the past eight months has been taking it up more seriously, travelling to events as far away as Sault Ste. Marie. He's actually beaten Paul Cecchini before but wasn't able to do it in this big event. Paul Gross won several trophies in 1985 competitions. Thursday night had the team travelling to Wingham to play hockey there. They came home with a sound 7 - 0 victory. They spread the goal scoring around. R. Nicholson assisted by Bruce John- ston and Ian Johnston scored the first goal, with Barry Blake assisted by Dean Nicholson and Jeff Earl getting the second goal of the first period. The second period had Mike Fraser and R. Nicholson combin- ing for the first goal and Dean Nicholson and Ian Johnston for the second giving the team a 4 - 0 lead. Ian Johnston took the lead in the third period scoring two goals with an assist from Ken Jamieson on the first and R. Nicholson and Johna- than Van Keulen on the second. Jeff Earl assisted by Ian Johnston and Barry Blake got the last goal of the game. Sunday afternoon had the boys at home for an exhibition game against Howick. It proved to be a good hockey game. The first period belonged to Brussels as they scored three unanswered goals. Those responsible for those goals were Rodney Nicholson, Dean Nicholson and Bruce Johnston. Assists went to Mike Fraser with three and B. Johnston and R. Nicholson one each. The second period went the other way and belonged to Howick as they scored three unanswered goals to tie the game. The third period saw Howick socre the go-ahead goal but Dean Nicholson assisted by Mike Fraser and Bruce Johnston combined to tie the score and Brussels held the visitors to a 4 - 4 tie. PEEWEE "B" TEAM The peewee "B" team was in Belgrave on Thursday night to play hockey. They scored a resounding 13 - 2 victory for their efforts. Brent Evans led the Brussels squad scoring four goals. Jason Cooper followed with three goals, Steve McCutcheon, two, Brad Taylor, two, Kevin Alcock, one and Roger Evans, one. Assists went to Brian Alexander with three, Brent Ev- ans, three, Brad Taylor, three, Jason Cooper, two, Roger Evans, two, Kevin Alcock, one and Steve McCutcheon, 1. The peewee "B's" were at home to Wallace on Saturday morning and played to a 2 - 2 tie. Brent Evans assisted by Brian Alexander got the first goal with Brad Taylor assisted by Roger Evans scoring the second goal. The "B" team will be travelling to Garden City to play hockey this weekend with Garden City return- ing to Brussels the weekend of Feb. 22 and 23. The Peewee "A" team played an exhibition game in Howick on Sunday evening. Brussels manag- ed to score the first goal of the game but were kept off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, as Howick outscored them 5 - 1. Dan Beuerman assisted by Greg Whee- ler and Darren Johnston scored the only Brussels goal. The Peewee "A" team willbe participating in the annual Legion hockey tournament taking place in Ripley this Saturday thanks to our local Legion Branch in Brussels. The Sprouts put together a team to play an exhibition game here on Saturday afternoon against Clin- ton. A stronger Clinton squad out- scored the home team 12 - 2. Tommie Pearson scored the only two goals for Brussels.
