Blyth Atoms drop close game
The CKNX Tryhards must have wondered what kind of animals they were playing when they took on the
Blyth Oldtimers at the Blyth and District Community Centre Saturday night. Nearly 800 people packed the
arena to see the fun and games.
Try Hards draw big crowd

BLADES
The CKNX Try Hards were in
Blyth to play the Oldtimers in a fun
filled game last Saturday night.
I am at a loss for words to
describe this game .... can you
believe it? The community-minded
sports fans who were there need no
description of this entertaining
game and those fans who were
unable to attend will have to wait
until next year to see what they
missed: a very enjoyable game
filled with cannonading shots,
scintillating saves, Gretzky-like
dekes and general mayhem. The
evening news on CKNX reported
that Blyth won 12 -10 although the
play of the game was recorded by
Sandy "the Refrigeration"
Thompson of the Try Hards who
scored the only touchdown of the
game. But who can forget the
intricate stickhandling moves per-
formed by goalie "Pampers"
McDougall as he scored on a
rink-length dash. The three assists
by Rusty Blades will no doubt go
down in Blyth hockey history as an
unparallel exhibition of passing
skills. The defensive work provid-
ed by Gump, Elbows, Lube Job,
Volts, Hit-man and Hip-Check
reminded fans of Coffey, Robin-
son, Langway and Potvin from
another league. The goaltending
duo of "Pampers" McDougall and
"Ratchet" Ritchie brought back
memories of Toronto Maple Leaf
'games.. Oust kidding).
Names to remember who, with a
little polish, might someday play in
the N.H.L. are Sawdust, Laflour,
Newfie, Skooter, Red Line, the
Stick, Red, J.R., Rocket and Nurse
Gunner.
Special thanks to the Try Hards
who give up their free time to help
raise money for local groups. Many
thanks to the Blyth Oldtimers who
put their tarnished reputation on
the line for this game of goodwill.
Any time •another victory is
required just give Red, J.R., and
the Unknown Scorer a call. Thanks
must also be sent out to the many
donors of door prizes. Thanks to
referees Jack Lee and Dave Cook
who did a remarkable job trying to
'keep this unorganized confugion
organized. Fran need not bother
baking any pies for awhile as
referee Dave received, not one, but
two cream pies for his efforts at
officiating.
All in all a great time was
enjoyed by all and the real winner
was Blyth Minor Sports as the fans
were literally hanging from the
rafters because an empty seat
could not be found in the building.
Upstairs after the game, con-
tests and games for the kids were
enjoyed while parents and fans
traded old hockey stories from
years ago which were becoming a
little hard to believe by night's end.
On behalf of Blyth Minor Sports I
would like to extend thanks to the
Blyth and area community for their
support in this venture. Everyone I
interviewed could not remember
the arena being so full before and
for that - we salute you.
Blyth Novices
tie Clinton
BY RUSTY BLADES
Last Wednesday, January 8 saw
the Clinton novice team come to
town and the two teams battled to a
3 - 3 draw.
Blyth opened the scoring in the
first period as Mike Bromley
scored a brilliant goal as he
stickhandled all the way down the
ice and deposited it behind the
Clinton goalie. The score remained
that way into the third period
whereonce again Mike scored an
unassisted goal on another rink-
length dash to put Blyth up 2 - 0.
Clinton quickly cut Blyth's lead in
half as they started to take control

Blyth Atoms dropped a close
game to Hen sall Monday night,
January 6 in Blyth.
The game was a low scoring
affair, unlike some of the team's
recent high-scoring shootouts and
Blyth could have used some of
those earlier goals.
Hensall took.the lead midway
through the first period then added
to the lead in the second period.
Blyth shut them down after than
and Billy Jim Scott came back to
make the score close and set up an
exciting finish. He scored at 6:50 of
the third period, assisted by Ian
Andrews.
Blyth had several close calls
after that but weren't able to get
the puck into the net to tie the
score.
Under the coaches' three star
system things were so close that
four stars were awarded. Billy Jim
Scott was given the star for effort
and Ian Andrews the defensive
star. Brian Van Steelandt and
Craig Roulston shared the offen-
sive player award for their posi-
tional play and close calls around
the net.
