County gives wage hikes in close vote BY BOB MURPHY Huron County department heads were granted a salary increase by members of county council Friday, Jan. 3 but not until after more than three hours of closed discussion on the issue and a recorded vote. With 18 councillors voting in favor of the increase to 13 opposed, council ultimately adopted the salaries and salary schedules for department heads exactly as pro- posed uy the executive committee. The package was originally presented at the last session of the previous council but the matter was deferred at that time until the first meeting of the new council in January. That meeting was Friday in the court house. at Goderich. Most members of council were reluctant to vote on the issue in November since it was the last sitting of that body. The consensus at the time was that such a decision was one for the incoming council, despite the assurance of a legal opinion which said the decision was within the jurisdiction of the then currently sitting council. It is considered by the executive committee that the new package will bring salaries of department heads in Huron County up to the average being paid to their peers in the adjoining counties. The proposal, as it was accepted, also includes a four per cent cost of living increase in each of the three years of the schedule. The proposal to make the agreement of three-years duration is to correspond with the term of council and the current increases are to be averaged over that three-year period. The new salary figures for each department head are as follows, with current salary in brackets: • Medical officer of health ($57,512) -1986, $61,672 or 7.2 per cent; 1987,566,014 or seven per cent; 1988, 70,694 or 7.1 per cent. • Huronview administrator ($37, 544) -1986, $41,002 or 9.2 per cent; 1987, $44,460 or 8.4 per cent; 1988, $47,892 or 7.7 per cent. • Social services administrator ($32,578) -1986, $35,334 or 8.5 per cent; 1987, $38,090 or 7.8 per cent; 1988, $40,820 or 7.2 per cent. • Clerk-treasurer and admini- strator ($51,974 - 1986, $55,172 or 6.2 per cent; 1987, $58,370 or 5.8 per cent; 1988, $61,542 or 5.4 per cent. • County engineer ($48,074) - 1986, $51,272 or 6.7 per cent; 1987, $54,444 or 6.2 per cent; 1988, $57,642 or 5.9 per cent. • Deputy clerk-treasurer ($44, 460) -1986, $47,450 or 6.7 per cent; 1987, $50,440 or 6.3 per cent; 1988, $53,430 or 5.9 per cent. • Planning director ($45,188) - 1986, $48,542 or 7.4 per cent; 1987, $51,896 or 6.9 per cent; 1988, $55,224 or 6.4 per cent. • County librarian ($34,866) - 1986, $36,894 or 5.8 per cent; 1987, $38,922 or 5.5 per cent; 1988, $40,950 or 5.2 per cent. • Museum director ($34,060) - 1986, $35,412 or four per cent; 1987, $36,816 or four per cent; 1988, $38,298 or four per cent.
