OPP report
impaired driving
down
There was a dramatic reduction
in the incidence of drinking and
driving around the area during this
holiday season, police at the
Wingham OPP detachment report.
So dramatic, in fact, that spot
checks carried out throughout the
Christmas and New Year's holi-
days failed to turn up one impaired
driver.
The reduced incidence of im-
paired driving also showed up in an
improved safety record over the
holidays, Cpl. William Skelding of
the Wingham OPP reported. In
spite of the bad weather in
December, there were 11 fewer
accidents than during the same
period last year.
Cpl. Skelding said he thinks the
prospect of a mandatory one-year
licence suspension for impaired
drivers has people worried. It
would be pretty tough for many
people in the area to hold a job
without being able to drive, he
noted.
He also noted that spot check
programs in Toronto and London
had similar results, turning up very
few drinking drivers.
Everyone sat down and enjoyed
tea, coffee and cookies.
The business was conducted
with the president Don Haines in
the chair. The secretary, Anne
Vincent read the minutes of the last
meeting and the annual report.
Dorothy Grange was chosen to be a
representative for District 8. The
treasurer's report was given by
Mrs. Ross Robinson.
The report of the nominating
committee was read by Mrs.
Orval McPhee. For 1986, officers
are: president, Don Haines; first
five present, Maureen Bean;
second vice president, Betty
Marsh; secretary, Anne Vincent;
assistant secretary, Marion Hag-
gitt; treasurer, Margaret Robin-
son.
Directors to retire in 1986 are
Dorothy Grange, Irma Cartwright,
Jane Glousher, El. Lapp,' Kay
Lapp; directors to retire in 1987,

Lansing, Jim Cartwright, Grace
Cartwright; Pianist, Phyllis Rod-
gers; assistant pianist, Marjorie
McDougall; auditors, Marion Hag-
gitt, Lillian Letherland; telephone
committee, Margaret Robinson,
