Bishop helps St. Augustine CWL celebrate 25th anniversary On Sunday, Jan. 5, St. Augus- tine Cathlic Women's League held its 25th Anniversary celebration at the church. Bishop John Sherlock, Bishop of London celebrated the Mass and Rev. Father Remark, Chancillor of the Diocese and Rev. Father Frank Dentinger Resident Priest assisted him. Mrs. Cyril Boyle was the commentator. Mrs. Theresa Hick- ey and Mrs: Leona Boyle were the readers. Mrs. Rene Stalenhottf sang Ave Maria. Mrs. Leona Hickey, our Past President intro- duced the present executive and Mrs. AgnesDelbergne, President- elect welcomed the Bishop. ' Mrs. William Redmond, the first president back in 1961, and Mrs. Neil Stapleton present president were presented with roses from ers held their card party in the Community Centre on Friday evening, Jan. 10 with 12 tables playing. Winners as follows: high, Lenora Mills, Harry Jacklin; low, Dorothy Dilworth, Gordon Hanna: lone hands, Becci Ruppel Ken Crawford; playing at the lucky table, Margaret Dunbar, Mrs. Raynard, Jim Cooper, Donald Clark; lucky tallies, Annie Engel, Eluned McNair. The Forester's are having a family dance on Jan. 17 and another euchre Jan. 24. Bishop John Sherlock. Members enjoyed a lovely hot meal prepared and sewed by the young people of our parish. Father Frank Dentinger our resident The regular meeting of the Council of the Township of Grey was held in the Municipal Office on January 6. General accounts amounting to $14,550.59 and road accounts amounting to $15,703.42 were approved for payment. Graeme MacDonald and Roy Williamson were authorized to attend the Good Roads Convention in Toronto, February 23 to 26. Tax collection dates were dis- cussed and it was decided that taxes would still be collected in two installments with the due dates being June 30 and November 28. However, 60 per cent of taxes will be due in June and the balance in November. Next regular meeting is schedul- ed for January 20 V 9:30 a.m. BY MRS. MAC ENGEL Mrs. John Vanass was hostess for the annual meeting of the Ladies Aid of Knox Presbyterian church on Jan. 8 with an attend- ance of 12. Mrs. Stuart Stevenson opened the meeting with a prayer for the New Year followed by a reading on the same theme. "Come let us sing of a wonderful love" was sung. Mrs. Stevenson contributed hum- ourous readings with one entitled "Angels also know". All joined in the Lord's Prayer. A quiz on "bed sheets" was enjoyed. Mrs. Leslie Knight, president, conducted the business. The minutes were read by secretary Mrs. Gordon Engel and treasurer Mrs. Clare Veitch gave her report showing a very good balance on hand. Roll call was a verse for the New Year. The church cleaning and catering lists were reviewed. It was decided to cater for the Federation of Agriculture in Feb- ruary and a committee was ap- pointed to plan for it. It was agreed to have a supper rather than the usual garage sale in June. The same officers will continue for 1986. 80TH BIRTHDAY The family of Mrs. Allan Smith gathered at the home of her son Harvey and Mrs. Smith on th occasion of her 80th birthday on Sunday, Jan. 5. Mrs. Smith has a family of eight sons and four daughters and all were present except one daughter. Also attend- ing were grandchildren and great grandchildren making a total of 87 who came to honor Mrs. Smith. They were from Woodstock, El- mira, Kitchener, Waterloo, Owen Sound, London, Listowel and Brussels. Some had to remain overnight owing to weather condi- tions later on Sunday. PERSONALS Ruth Jean-Louis of Willowdale visited on the weekend with John and Mrs. Vanass and family. Visiting with Wilfred and Mrs. Strickler and the Vanass family on Jan. 4 were Mr. and Mrs. John Strickler and Greg, Ingersoll, Heidi, St. Marys, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Adams and girls, Atwood, Lorne and Mrs. Strickler, David and Shelly. John Schnock was admitted to Listowel Memorial hospital on Sunday, Jan. 5. Gerald Knight, son of Leslie and Mrs. Knight spent Jan. 3 serving as a page at the Huron County Council meeting at Goderich. Paul Engel of Kitchener compet- ed in the tough lightweight division (154 lbs.) at the Canadian National 'Over the Top' Arm Wrestling Championships held in Toronto at the International Centre. Paul was beaten in the finals by Paul Cecchini who is the defending Canadian and World-Champion. The event attracted 197 competi- tors in nine men and two women weight divisions. The lightweight class drew the largest entry, 43. for his showing Paul Engel won a trophy plus $100. Paul is the son of Mrs. Gordon Engel and grandson of Mrs. Mac Engel.
