United church holds service
Many Brussels residents went
visiting over the holiday period and
two winged residents were no
exception.
Two white swans owned by
Bruce McCall of Brussels, decided
to take a paddle down stream to
visit Wingham during the holiday
period.
The swans apparently set out in
search of new horizons when the
water was let out of the Brussels
Millpond. Mr. McCall noted that
he was away and missed a couple of

in the Common Room on Monday
evening, January 6, Mary David-
son, president being in charge of
the meeting.
The roll call was answered with
nine members. Sister Margaret
McCutcheon, Sec. read the min-
utes and the treasurer's report. A
get well card was signed by the
members and sent to Sister Anne
Th,ime. Members decided to
cancel the Feb. and March meet-
DORA METZGER
Mrs. Dora Metzger of 301
Eighth Ave. Hanover, died Dec-
ember 25, 1985 at General and
Marine Hospital, Owen Sound.
She was the beloved wife of
Sylvester Metzger, dear mother of
Audrey, Mrs. Rodney Helwig, of
Neustadt; Gloria, Mrs. C. L.
Vanslyke, of Toronto; Rev. David
Metzger of Pembroke; Lewis of
Barrie and Emily, Mrs. George
Cousins of Brussels. One son
William predeceased her.
Also surviving are 13 grand-
feedings, which probably prompt-
ed the odyssey.
Since the swans are pinioned
and cannot fly, they paddled their
way downstream from Brussels to
Wingham, eventually showing up
below the foundry, where the
Howson Dam blocked further
progress.
"The birds showed good sense
in their selection of a new home",
said Mr. McCall, who eventually
learned the location of his run-
aways. "It is sheltered, with access
ings and the group will assume
meetings in April. Jean Bridge
conducted a few contests. Prizes
were won by Mary Lowe, Mary
Davidson, Marie McTaggart, Mar-
garet McCutcheon and Sarah
Stephenson. Euchre was played
and a salad lunch was served by
Mary Lowe, Vera Hastings and
Sarah Stephenson. Mary Davidson
thanked Verna Thomas and Winni-
fred Edgar for having the meeting.
children, nine great grandchildren
and two sisters, Emma, Mrs.
Orlando Meister of Hanover and
Norma, Mrs. Herbert Metzger of
Hanover. Laura Metzger, and
William and David Schaus prede-
ceased her.
The funeral service took place
from St. Matthew's Evangelical
Lutheran Church, on Dec. 28, 1985
at 2 p.m. Spring Interment will be
in Hanover Cemetery. Memorial
contributions are accepted to the
charity of one's choice.
Sunday, Jan. 5 Brussels United
hurch group held the weekly
church service at Callander Nurs-
ing home. Betty Campbell read the
scriptures. A trio consisting of
Betty Campbell, Betty Graber and
Lynn Thomas sang. Lynn Thomas
also sang a solo.
Monday, the residents played
bingo in the afternoon with Bill
Close holding the trophy. In the
evening the Purdys from the
Salvation Army visited. Euchre
was played on Tuesday. Eva
Stewart was transferred to Wing-
ham hospital.
Wednesday evening the United
Church ladies sang hymns with
Lark McDonald at the piano.
to food, and in fact is even better
than their usual wintering spot on
the river in front of his house".
"In addition Jim and Gail
Newell of RR 2, Wingham, have
been feeding them, as has he.
They're being well looked after."
Although the swans appear
quite comfortable where they are,
Mr. McCall said he plans to come
over and collect them soon.
Recapturing them does not pose
any great problem, since the birds
are quite tame and will come when
he calls them. However it does
appear to be a job for hip-waders,
and he would prefer to wait until
the weather is not quite so cold, he
said.
There's no problem having them
stray at this time of year, but in the
spring when the swans mate and
begin nesting he wants them
nearby where he can keep an eye on
them.
Mr. McCall, who has a licence to
keep the birds, also has three
young swans which stayed at
home.
Jalmar Pietikainen was trans-
ferred to Wingham Hospital on
Thursday.
Friday, Ann Smith played the
piano in the morning and in the
afternoon, Karen Cardiff and Jean
Evans led the discussion group.
Just a reminder to all residents
that January 16 is voting day.
There will be an election for
President and Vice President for
Resident Council.
Three residents are in Wingham
Hospital, Jack Hamilton, Eva
Stewart and Jalmar Pietikainen. It
is hoped they will soon be well and
back home.
