Blyth Atoms lose despite
more McNichol . goals
Blyth Novice 'B's
win Exeter tournament
The Blyth Novice "B — team took
part in a tournament and came
home with the championship
trophy.
Blyth defeated St. Marys 4 - 0 in
their opening game of the tourna-
ment. Wilfred Datema opened the
scoring in the first period with an
unassisted goal. Joe Fraser got the
only goal of the second period with
an assist from Tim Lyons.
The third period saw Blyth score
twice more with Wilfred Datema
counting his second goal with an
assist from Scott Arthur and then
Scott Arthur scoring assisted by
Wilfred Datema and Mark Shep-
herd.
Blyth took on Parkhill in the
second game of the tournament
and won by a 4-2 count.
Aftcr a scoreless first period,
BY RUSTY BLADES
Well, 1986 is here and it brings
the Blyth novice team back into
action after a long holiday break.
This Wednesday, January 8
brings the Clinton novice team to
Blyth for a seven o'clock matchup.
Come on out and enjoy an
entertaining game.
Just one last reminder about the
upcoming game against the CKNX
Try Hards. The game is this
Saturday, January 11 at 7:30 at the
arena with the Blyth Oldtimers
facing off against the Try Hards.
Gump, Elbows, Gunner, Chico,
Blyth scored twice in the second
period, both by Tim Lyons. The
first goal was unassisted and the
second goal was assisted by Marty
Lawrence and Wilfred Datema.
Blyth added two more goals in
the third period: Marc Bricker from
Tim Lyons and Michael DeJong
from Marty Lawrence and Marc
Bricker.
Parkhill scored twice in the last
five minutes of the game to make
the score appear closer.
Blyth shut out another St. Marys
team, the Maple Leafs in the
championship game. The first
period was scoreless but Tim Lyons
scored in the second on a set-up
from Brad Walsh. Scott Arthur
scored an unassisted goal in the
third party to lock up the champion-
ship.
the Unknown Scorer and the rest of
the Oldtimers are eagerly awaiting
this game.
Afterwards there will be a family
dance and social gathering in the
arena auditorium. This event is
indeed a family event which will be
enjoyable for young and old alike
and will no doubt go down as the
entertainment event of the year for
Blyth. Anything less than a full
house will be a disappointment as a
lot of work has gone into prepara-
tions to ensure a successful
fundraising event for Blyth Minor
Sports.
See you there!!!
The scoring heroics of Michael
McNichol weren't enough Sunday
afternoon as the Blyth Atoms
dropped an exhibition game to
Wingham by a 10 - 4 count.
The two teams were close during
the early going but Wingham
pulled away in the third period to
build up a lop-sided score that
wasn't really indicative of the play.
Blyth stayed close mainly
through the slick skating and
puckhandling of the young Mr.
McNichol who, as he's done in
most recent games, provided most
of the scoring. After Wingham had
taken an early lead, McNichol
came back with three goals. Brian
Gross sent him away for the first
goal and Craig Roulston assisted
on the last two. They were all
picture goals as he broke in on the
goalie, deked him then dumped an
easy backhand into the net.
If McNichol had been luckier, he
might have had his team even more
in the game as he pulled the same
trick two more times but once just
pissed the corner and another time
hit the post.
Blyth was down by two goals
going into the third period but
enjoyed a two-man advantage after
a rash of Wingham penalties.
Danny Van Bakel's shot from the
point, assisted by (who else?)
Michael McNichol, brought Blyth
closer but then with Wingham only
one man down they scored a
short-handed goal and it was all
down hill from there as Wingham
players could do no wrong and
Blyth couldn't get the kind of
bounces they needed to keep in the
game.
Despite seeing 10 goals go
behind him, Jason Elliott played a
strong game in goal and was
chosen one of the three stars for his
team, part of a new program by the
team management to reward
players for outstanding contribu-
tion to their team. Naturally Mike
McNichol was one of the others and
Ian Andrews earned the third star
for his strong defensive work.
The team has an exhibition game
against Brussels in Brussels on
Friday night.
