before Brussels' Tim Fritz assisted

the Mustangs.
The second period belonged to
Clinton as well. They kept Brussels
off the scoreboard and added the
only goal of the period.

JUNIORS WIN EXETER
TOURNAMENT
The Brussels Bulls didn't play
any league games this past
weekend but participated in the
annual Junior "d" tournament in
Exeter.
Brussels played the opening
game of the tournament against
Thedford. Brussels took a 2 - 0 lead
in the first period with goals by
Kevin Ruttan and Tom Newbigg-
ing with assists to Tim Fritz (2) and
Murray Dewar (1).
The second period had Rob
Cardiff scoring unassisted and
Murray Dewar assisted by Ruttan
and Newbigging getting these-
cond goal with Thedford getting a
single marker and ending the
period at 4 - 1.
Kevin Ruttan assisted by Rob
Cardiff got Brussels only goal of
the third period while Thedford

The Brussels Juniors were at
home to their old rivals the
Seaforth Centennaires Sunday
afternoon, December 22.
The usual rugged see-saw battle
followed. The visitors opened the
scoring the first period but Brus-
sels managed to come back and tie
the game with Mike Vincent and
Jim Bender getting credit for the
goal. The period ended in a 1-1
tied.
Brussels came out strong early
in the second period to take the lead
in the hockey game. Mike Chap-
man assisted by Rob Cardiff and
Mike Vincent scoredthe second
goal with Tim Fritz and Kevin
McArter clicking to score the third.
The team let up for the remainder
of the period and Seaforth scored
three answered goals and ended
the period with a 4-3 lead.
Seaforth added one more goal
early in the third period but Jim
Bender and Kevin McArter com-
bined to score a goal for Brussels
and keep the game in reach. In an
attempt to tie the game, the coach
pulled goalie Jeff McGavin for an
extra attacker but it back-fired as
Seaforth scored in the empty net to
win the hockey game 6-4. This
victory put the two teams at par for
the season with a win each and a tie
game.
Boxing Day afternoon saw the
Mt. Brydges Bulldogs in town for a
re-scheduled hockey game moved
ahead from Jan. 12. It proved to be
one of the better games of the
season.
A speedy end-to-end period of
hockey had the players back in the
dressing room in 25 minutes after
their 1 p.m. start. The period was a
scoreless tie.
win. Brussels claimed a 5 - 3 victory
for their first win in the tourna-
ment.
Saturday night found them
playing a team from Ayr for their
second game. Mike Vincent assist-
edby Mike Chapman and Rollie
Smith got the only goal of the first
period giving Brussels and a 1-0
lead. The Bulls managed to add
three more goals in the second.
Murray Dewar scored two of those
goals with assists going to New-

There wasn't too much minor
hockey activity in the past week
until Friday night. The Novice
team hosted Huron Park in the first
game of the night and they
narrowly defeated them by a4-3
score.
Matt Lee scored two goals
unassisted with Randy Beuerman,
assisted by Tim Machan, and Ryan
Finch getting credit for goals three
and four.
The Atoms played the second
game of the night and romped over
Exeter's second team by a 13 - 1
score. Brett Lee lead the Brussels
attack with five goals, Greg Clark
added two, as well as Todd
Machan. Singles went to David
Jacklin, Brad Beuerman, Grant
Martin and Bobbi-Joe Rutledge.
Assists went to Michelle Machan,
Greg Fritz, Ross Machan, Sharie
Jacklin, Gerald DeVries, Todd
Machan, Brett Lee.
Brussels came out in the second
period and caught the Mt. Brydges
goalie off guard in the early
minutes of the period. Kevin
Wheeler picked up a pass from Rob
Cardiff and flipped a back-hand
shot at the goalie which slipped
through between his pads to give
Brussels a 1-0 lead. The remainder
of the period was the same
end-to-end quick brand of hockey
and remained scoreless.
The same defensive game of
hockey ensued in the third period.
It was a well-played game of
hockey until the last two minutes of
the game when the pile ofbodies on
the visitors blue line resembled
that of a third down scramble on the
one yard line. It resulted in the
ejection of five Bulldog players and
two Brussels Bulls.
The sharp goaltending of Mike
Smith kept the visitors off the
scoreboard and the Bulls in the
game and picked up a well-deserv-
ed shut-out. Congratulations guys
on a good game.
MINOR HOCKEY
Minor hockey games are a very
scarce item during the holiday
season, especially when the holi-
day falls on the scheduled night for
hockey for many teams. The
midgets played a visiting team
from Harriston the Wednesday
before Christmas. Brussels defeat-
ed the visitors by a 10-3 score. Paul
Coultes led the Brussels attack
scoring three goals; Marty Rut-
ledge score two goals with singles
going to Paul Koetsier, Brett
Garniss, Dean Lawrie, Jim Eng-
lish, Sean Kieffer. Assists went to
Andy Nethery, Ron Chambers,
Marty Rutledge, Paul Coultes,
Dean Lawrie, Sean Kieffer, and
Jim English.
bigging on the first and MacDon-
ald and Vincent on the second.
Rollie Smith scored the third with
assists from Chapman and Vin-
cent. Ayr got on the scoreboard
with a single goal.
The third period had Brussels
adding two more goals to their total
as Ayr did also but it wasn't
enough. Brussels claimed the 6 - 3
victory. Rollie Smith scored for

and Dewar. Dewar picked up a
The Peewee "A" team played
the third game of the night against
Elma-Logan and in a better game
of hockey than their previous
encounter. Elma-Logan won by a 5
- 2 score. Greg Mulvey scored
unassisted for Brussels first goal
with Darren Johnston and Danny
Beuerman scoring the second goal.
They were also at home on
Sunday afternoon to Seaforth for
an excellent game of hockey. The
score was tied at I - 1 at the end of
the first period and remained that
way until there 1:37 remaining in
the third period and Seaforth

of 20 seconds to get their 3 - 1

hat-trick as he scored the final goal
unassisted. This win put the Bulls
in the championship round on
Sunday night at 8 p.m.
Opposition for the champion-
ship round was provided by their
old rivals Grand Valley who had
eliminated Tavistock and Water-
ford from the tournament. An
excellent game of hockey ensued
as it generally does when these two
rivals meet. Brussels opened the
scoring with Kevin Ruttan and
Tom Newbigging combining for
their first point. It took Grand
Valley's Randy Boswell `til
midway through the first period to
beat the Brussels goalie and tie the
game. They combined once more
in the final two minutes of the
period to take a 2 - 1 lead.
Grand Valley scored early in the
second to add one more goal to
their lead but Brussels' Murray
Dewar, Kevin Ruttan and New-
bigging combined 30 seconds later
to keep the game in reach. Grand
Valley added one more and then
Troy Smith slipped on through
between the pads of the opposing
goalie, unassisted. The Valley's
Murray Hunter continued his
scoring ways as he picked up his
third goal of the period trying to
keep that two goal lead. With 48
seconds remaining in the period
Newbigging, Dewar and Ruttan
slipped one more by the goalie and
with two periods of play over, the
see-sawbattle ended 5 - 4 in favour
of Grand Valley.
The third period had the Valley
coming out and scoring two early
goals to give themselves a three
goal spread which looked pretty
good. Brussels never gave up and
continued to fight back as they
scored the next three goals and the
game was tied. Kevin Wheeler and
Troy Smith scored two of those
goals with Tim Fritz from New-
bigging and Dewar getting the
third. Four minutes remained on
the clock when Grand Valley
scored the go-ahead goal. All was
not over, with two seconds remain-
ing on the clock Kevin Wheeler
picked up his third goal of the
period with assists from Dave
Schmidt and Dewar to tie the game
once more.
A ten-minute sudden death
overtime period followed with the
same end-to-end hockey action and
three saves each for the goalies
when at 4:44 in a scramble around
the net, Mike Vincent and Tom
Newbigging tipped the puck in
past the Grand Valley goalie to give
Brussels the 9-8 victory.
The same two teams had played
the championship round last year
with the Valley winning a 5-4
decision, in the dying seconds of
that game. It was Brussels' turn to
celebrate.
Jubliation was undaunted by the
blustery weather outside which
was stranding motorists every-
where. Overnight accommodation
in Exeter was considered but a test
run by the die-hards who got
home to Brussels spread the word
and most people got home during
the wee small hours of the
morning. Honourable mention
goes to Mike Smith who picked up
the Most Valuable Goalie Trophy
for the tournament. Congratula-
tions to all the players for an
excellent three games of hockey,
(especially Sunday's), the best
game of the season.
The Bull's will be on the road
Friday night for an 8:30 game in
Mitchell. The all-star game will be
played in Lucan and Saturday night
and Sunday will find them idle as
they played that scheduled game
on boxine day.
