From the Minister's Study
What is stoping our vision for 1986?
BY REV. VIC JAMIESON
BRUSSELS & BELGRAVE
PREBYTERIAN CHURCHES
The King James version of the
Bible tells us in Proverbs 29:18:
"Where there is no vision, the
people perish: but he that keepeth
the law, happy is he" and in Hosea
4:6: "My people are destroyed for
lack of knowledge...
This is the time of year when
many people are shaping their
thoughts about the new year. All of
us, consciously or unconsciously,
like to know where we are going
and how, and if we are going to get
there. At present our vision for
1986 maybe blurred by the loss of
someone close to us this past year;
by the declining purchasing power
of our money or lack of a steady
source of income; by our increasing
national debt and how its resolu-
tion will most likely lower our
lifestyle; by the threat of nuclear
war and soon. All of us need the
best on-going guidance to clear our
vision so that our lives will contain
love, joy, peace, endurance and
other necessary ingredients for a
happy new year.
I have been led to put my trust,
along with others down through
the ages, in God's Word rather
than the crystal ball projections
that come from man's own words.
But !confess, along with many
hope, that I need to make feeding
on God's Word as regular as daily
consuming physical food. Most
ot us are a long way from Job 23:12:
"1 have esteemed the words of his
(God's) mouth more than my
necessary food." Let us get a true
and on-going daily direction for our
lives through daily reading of the
Bible and asking God in prayer
what it means for us.
We can read all bb books of the
Bible in 1986 according to Dennis
J. DeHaan, executive editor of
daily devotional known as Daily
Bread, by reading three and
one-half chapters a day from
Genesis to Revelations. Let us try
to read some in the morning when
we get up and the rest when we go
to bed. We shall come to know that
there exists in a changing world an
unchanging God whose word is
