ROGER GELWICKS BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH The Christmas and New Year's Season can be a busy time of the year. We spend extra time buying Christmas presents. We visit with family and friends. We attend a party or two. It is really a time of celebration and enjoyment. And often in the hustle and bustle we don't take time to reflect on life itself. But traditionally New Year's has been considered a time of reflec- tion. At New Year's we make new resolutions. At the changing of the year we evaluate what has happen- ed over the past year and make changes for the next. Of course, many ^esolutions that are made are quite insignificant. And within a week's time we have forgotten that they were ever made. But that is not true of all resolutions. A lot of thought and reflection have gone into some New Year's decisions. But such serious reflection on life and our own life styles are not the normal pattern today. Why is that? Why do we spend so little time reflecting on life, on our goals for life, and the purpose and meaning of our own life, and even the relationships we have with other people? It seems that life can pass us by without us even giving a thought to what is happening. Is this unimportant that we take time to reflect on our lives? !don't think anyone of us would want to admit to that. To each one of us our life is very important. We just don't take the time to consider and weigh our lives. We live in a "hurry up" society. There are so many things to fill our lives that it seems that there is little time left for reflection. The responsibil- ity of being a doctor, farmer, housewife or minister are becom- ing increasingly more time con- suming. And even when we do have free time there are so many activities to fill our schedules. But if we really come right down to it the fact that we don't reflect on life is more than a problem of not having enough time. It is really a matter of priorities. Although we know that our lives, and the shape and direction they take are import- ant we allow other things to have the priority over life reflection. We leave undone the things that we should do in order to fill our lives with other things. In fact it has been said that mankind's greatest danger in our society is to let the urgent things crowd out the important things. We live in a constant tension between the urgent and important. The prob- lem is though, that the important things can often be put off for Meals on Wheels holds banquet The Christmas banquet for the Brussels Meals on Wheels partici- pants and volunteers was on Tuesday, December 10 at noon at the Brussels, Morris and Grey arena. The volunteers were recog- nized for their dedicated and enthusiastic service. A program featuring local talent provided the entertainment. Meals on Wheels has been operating in Brussels since 1982. Presently we are serving 30 to 40 seniors every Tuesday. For further information you can call 887-6112. New participants and persons interested in volunteering are always welcome. another time. Whereas the urgent things can not be put off. And so we put off the important task of reflecting on the meaning and purpose of our own life. Perhaps the problem goes deep- er than not giving time to life reflection. Maybe we don't want or are afraid to reflect on the meaning of our own life. Maybe we recognize that we will find an empty void and we would be forced to face an ultimately meaningless existence. But God did not intend for people to live apart from meaning and purpose. And God intended that man would experience His love. That is why God sent his Son Jesus Christ into our world. As we identify our lives with Jesus Christ we can experience God's love, purpose and meaning for life. As we come into the New Year take some time to seriously reflect on your life. Think about your life in terms of purpose, ultimate mean- ing and direction. And if you are not satisfied may I suggest that you seek out a Christian church that exalts the Bible as God's authorita- tive word. There you will find the answers for a meaningful and purposeful life. Have a wonderful New Year and may it be full of good resolutions. Blyth Christian Reformed Church HIGHWAY 4, BLYTH Rev.
